I need some serious help
Has anyone here quit smoking or have friends who quit? If so how did they quit? Damn nicotine is taking over my life. Thanks."Besides pride, loyalty, discipline, heart, and mind, confidence is the key to all the locks." --Joe Paterno

Re: I need some serious help
Hey psufan, long time no see I guess.
If I had any advice to offer I would, but I don't know of anyone who tried to quit. I know my grandpa is a smoker and I tell him to try to quit but since he's on the other side of the world I can't do anything about.
You should probably have people you know try to help you out, slowly ease on smoking. Don't try to take it upon yourself. -
Re: I need some serious help
I don't smoke, never have never will, but almost my entire family, and most of my friends do.
That being said, I know of seven people who read, http://www.quitsmoking.com/books/allencarr/index.htm, and all seven of them quit. Might be something to check out, I know you can get it at Borders.
Good luck man.Comment

Re: I need some serious help
I'm about 2 weeks short of 3 years without a smoke.
Cold Turkey.
People will tell you it's the hardest way, but it's also the quickest way. Slowly smoking less and less is still smoking. Rip it off like a bandaid.

Re: I need some serious help
I smoked for about 4 or 5 years in high school and college and that's how I stopped. One day I just decided to stop and that was it. I'll still smoke the occasional cigar but I havn't had a cigarette in about 5 years. Most people who are trying to quit will try to reduce how much they smoke, which just doesn't work. If you have cigarettes, you'll smoke them so saying "im only going to smoke half a pack a day" just doesn't work.Originally posted by Clay_OSI'm about 2 weeks short of 3 years without a smoke.

Re: I need some serious help
I quit cold turkey with the help of nicorette gum.
I found the gum really helpful for that 1st painful week.
A few other things that helped me -
I also happened to be moving from a situation where I lived with smokers to living with non-smokers. So, not being around it and not being able to smoke in the house helps. It was really tough to quit while living with smokers. Try to stay away from it for a while as much as possible.
I also started to scare myself to quit. I really, really focused on how bad it is health-wise. I started to imagine all the thousands and thousands of cigarettes I smoked in my life and the damage they might have done. I didn't want to keep adding to that damage. I also have a fear of throat cancer, so I started to imagine that the next cigarette I smoke could be the one that gives me cancer and I would need to live the rest of my life with one of those voice-boxes. It's kind of silly, but it did help me not want to smoke anymore and that's the key - you really have to *want* to quit or you'll never pull it off.Comment

What he said. And you got to want to quit smoking as well. Dont let anyone force or constantly get you to quit. It wont work that way.

Re: I need some serious help
It might sound dumb, but it's all about mind over matter.
You have to want to quit. I mean, really want to quit. Convince yourself that you don't need them. What good do they provide you? What negatives do they provide?
As Clay_OS stated, cold turkey is the best way. Make sure you mark down the day you quit. Then everyday make sure you think about what # day it is since you quit and how much better it's been.
I never smoked, but I quit chewing Copenhagen about 1.5 years ago. I quit cold turkey and really didn't have too hard of a problem doing it. My reasons for quiting:
- It saved me nearly $20 per week (which totals approx $1000 per year). I can now invest that money whereas I was essentially throwing it away before.
- As I got older, the thought of getting cancer and dying from it worried me.
- I knew I didn't need it and it provided nothing substantial to me.
- I didn't want my family and girlfriend to worry anymore. They were very concerned.
Maybe some of those will help you. Quitting was the best thing I did.Comment

I don't see how anyone could argue against those decisions.Originally posted by joeboo- It saved me nearly $20 per week (which totals approx $1000 per year). I can now invest that money whereas I was essentially throwing it away before.

Re: I need some serious help
I quit cold-turkey also. What also helped me was doing other stuff to occupy my time. Whenever I wanted a smoke, I would eat sunflower seeds, chew gum, drink water, workout or just play video games. The hardest part is the 1st couple of weeks of being irritable (sp?). If you can survive the 1st month without ANY cigs, you will be ok. Just have some discipline.Comment
