I need advice getting a room to live in for school.

I am finally moving out of my town (santa barbara, ca), to San diego, ca to attend San Diego State University. This will be the first time that I move out of my family's house so I am finally taking on more responsibilities. Now I am just a rookie here so I am asking if any of you can please offer me advice on finding and paying for a room to live in.

How does the process work and how do you guys work out your bills and everything? I'm just afraid I might not have the money to pay for school and my living expenses. I have the option of taking a Federal Loan that is deferred, but the it is only enough to pay for my tuition and not my housing. I don't know what other loans or methods of payments I can take.

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

One option would be to get a job. Also, are you on any scholarships? If so, do they provide for on-campus housing?

If you are really concerned about how you are going to pay for everything, are you really sure you need to be going away for college? Would it be better to live at home and go to a school close to your parent's home? Just some things to think about.

I'm gonna look for a job when I get down to SD, not sure how I can get one if I am 4 hours away and score an interview lol, but if it's possible, then I guess it could work.

They do provide on-campus housing, but I missed the deadline to apply and it probably wouldn't work out for me because I want my own room to play guitar and stuff.

I already went to a city college here for 4 years, I think that's enough going there lol. I am actually transferring to SDSU.

Do you know anybody down there yet? Maybe they know of some people in need of a roommate. I remember having to live with strangers for a semester, but they turned out to be great friends. (I think at first they only wanted me for rent money.)

Then as time goes on you will have a better sense of your options. I ended up rushing a fraternity and had about 4 different options to stay, but i know SDSU isn't big on fraternities. You don't need one there.. it's already one BIG party.

If you need money, i reccomend getting a job in the restaurant industry. You can usually craft your hours around your school schedule with nights and day shifts. Plus it helps out your pocketbook and people skills. ...all things you will need in and outta college. good luck

One thing to keep in mind is that most landlords ask for the first and last month's rent in advance, and maybe a security deposit on top of that. So be sure to have enough money to start with.

Second, if you're living with other people, take care of the rent yourself. I had a roommate who said he would pay the rent (I wrote him a check for my half) and he ended up spending my money on himself and never payed the rent. I only found out when the collection notice came in the mail. Not good...

If you have to pay for utilities, etc, I would only go with the things you really need (you can probably live without cable, etc, for a month or two). That way you can budget for what you NEED (i.e. electricity and such) and then find out what you have left over to spend on the less-important stuff.
