Building collapses, burns in New York

An explosion and fire leveled a residential building on New York's Upper East Side this morning, fire officials and witnesses told CNN. At least one person was transported to the hospital, New York firefighters said. CNN's Larry King, who had been in his hotel room nearby, described the explosion as sounding like a bomb and feeling like an earthquake. "I've never heard a sound like that," King said.

        Appears to be gas explosion.

can't be too bad if only one person was sent to the hospital... thank goodness for that.

I guess since this happened in New York City its newsworthy.. From now on, any time a building explodes, catches fire, or is otherwise damaged in New York City, terroristic suspicions will arise initially, and the media will be right there to maintain and instill a constant, but varying, level of panic.

yep they are all hoping for a terrorist attack so they can pick up some ratings...

Of course it was just a distraught doctor trying to kill himself with a gas leak...

To avoid a threadjack, and potential flamewar that would ultimately end to thread lockage, I will just say that this "world we live in" is a result of many factors that work off one another to influence the public and how they react to, and value, various situations that occur on a given day. I don't hold the media solely liable, but I do think they play a significant part in the process.

The controllers of the media are hugely powerful people in this, or any, country that claims to have a free press.

Yeah man, that was my initial reaction. I'm numb to it by now (having been in school in NYC for the last four years did it to me).

Back on topic, that's terrible for the others in that building. If you want to end your life, please don't hurt others while doing it! I've heard about it before with motorists on a death spiral simply going out of control and harming others.

Don't you think it proves we have a free press when Republicans call the media left-wing, and Democrats call the media right-wing. I used to be on the hate media bandwagon also and I still think it's fairly corrupt, but the main media's number one goal is to make money, not support a political party.

There is indeed a free press. Here's how one can tell:

                            MSNBC: Flaming Liberals

                            CNN: Somewhere down the middle

                            FNC: Hardcore conservatives

Newshour with Jim Lehrer: pretty fair and balanced but slants a little to the left.

As you can see there's news for all people and that's just the electronic news media!

To me, politics, making money, and corruption are often one and the same, or at least closely related.

But, again, the continuation of this thread is likely going to enter into politics, as well as straying off topic.
