Losing a Pet: R.I.P. Quincy

About 2 hours ago our ferret Quincy died from complications from surgery from a perferation in his intestines. He was only 4 years old (ferrets live 7-10 years). I am devastated right now and my wife his even worse off as he was her baby. I am more sickened by the fact the emergency animal hospital we brought him to on Saturday night allowed him to bleed from his rectum for hours before we called them and were told we should bring him to Tufts Animal Hospital, and then took over 30 minutes to discharge us and close to an hour before we left for Tufts with him. I can't help but think had they told us earlier that we would've been able to save him.

Our other ferrets are devastated, he was pretty much the alpha male of the group and being the perceptive animals they are they already seem to know. Now I need to ask for advice from people who can probably be much more rationale than I am right now or could become on this matter. Should I contact the MA Board of Veterinary Medicine about the grossly inadequate care he received before we could transfer him to Tufts? I am trying to come up with a good reason, and I just can't do it right now.

This was our little guy about a year ago.

Sorry for your loss man. It sucks to lose a family member, even the furry variety For the most part, most 24 hour emergency clinics or hospitals are concerned with one thing, money. My wife worked for one for a year or so and that was all they were concerned with. She finally left after an animal that was hit by a car and should have been euthanized, was given a 1400 dollar operation and died a day after the surgery. The boss even told them to coax the family into the surgery, and she wouldn't go along with it and left.

sorry for your loss... it sickens me that hospitals, either the pet or human kind, can so negligent & only look at the bottom line...

I feel your pain man. My black labrador retriever, who was 10 years old, died yesterday after being bit by a coral snake (i live in Florida). Extremely tragic and extremely difficult to deal with. I'm 16 now, and i had grown up with that dog for practically my entire child hood. I couldn't of asked for a better dog. RIP Max.

This is why I hate owning pets.
When they die it's just as bad as if someone human that was close to you died.
Then to do the same thing over again... put yourself through that pain again 10yrs later.... repeat cycle.

As for telling the Vet Clinic Board... i'd at least it bring it to their attention. If enough people complain about these crappy animal hosptials, eventually something will be done.

Much like the Human ones, there is no money in a true cure. Only a partial one. And only to try and drag things out to make more money. There's very few true people left out there in this industry. *sighs*

This is why a sea turtle would make the perfect pet.

Today has been a little easier for us, but still hard. My wife really needs a day off from work but that isn't happening for a disheartening reason. The other ferrets (we have 7 now) are doing okay, but we are going to move their room so that they can move on.

Aw, he was a precious little guy...

My girlfriend just got a little nine-week-old female chihuahua that she named Mackenzie. We'd both be really upset if we lost her (I've already been through it once with a previous dog).

wow. that kind of reminds me of my dogs story, sorta. except the doctors seemed nice enough and recommended not to have surgery because of her age.. I wouldve killed someone if they did the surgery with them recommending it. your wife did the right thing and left. Knowing that some are out for the money, i thank god that we found some honest vets that truly cared for the animals they treat.

I'm slowly coping from my dogs death. 9 weeks ago we had to put her down. Gradually degradation from a tumor in her pelvis. It was something that would only get worse but it happened so fast

we have my sisters dog who was like a sister to my dog. she's 8 now and my dog that died was 12. But having that dog around really helps cope.

it sounds like you have other ferrets around so that should sorta help
