He was the first one we bought, and sadly about 3 weeks ago another one of our ferrets was diagnosed with Insulinoma, so we may lose him within the year as well. For the ferrets Quincy was the alpha male of the group by virtue of his age and they really followed his lead on a lot of things. Now our oldest is our female Reiny and our oldest and biggest male is Loki. The others already seem to be following him, so hopefully he helps them through this.

I feel for you, man...I have a year old kitten, and remember when we had to put the cat I had from age 2 to 19 to sleep...it's tough losing a pet, they become part of the family.

Ahh, I hear ya. I do not look forward to the day when my cat succumbs to age. I've had her since I was six (I'm 22 now) and can hardly remember what it was like before her. She's got a degenrative kidney disease that we caught early on that shouldn't impact her a whole lot. I'm hoping she can get to an even 20.

Re: Losing a Pet: R.I.P. Quincy

After much thought and consideration to the consequences to others in my region, I have decided I am going to file a formal complaint with the Commonwealth against the veterinary hospital we first took Quincy to. I have little doubt these vets are competent when it comes to dogs and cats, however I can't not blame them for allowing him to bleed for several hours before I called them about his status nor the hour it took to discharge us and get him out the door when the vet told us to 'rush' him to Tufts. I don't know how much of this made a difference in the final outcome, and I don't know that I ever want to know, but I feel the Commonwealth should have a chance to investigate what happened and determine what action needs to be taken in regards to this hospital.

I have decided that a private malpractice suit isn't worth the time, nor emotional drain on my wife. I have however decided that when I return to school for the fall I am going to try and start an Animals Rights club. For those that don't know, under the law of virtually every state animals are treated as property, much like your television or shoes. I feel given the nature of the relationship we form with our pets this has got to change, afterall it is the year 2006. It is still hard without him and our ferret family doesn't feel complete anymore, but maybe some good for others can come from our loss.

I think that's a really great idea. I genuinely hope it works out.

              Sorry about your loss.

Out of curiousity, do ferrets make good pets?

It depends on a lot of things, if you or anyone here is thinking of getting on PM me and I'll gladly answer questions about them. For my wife and I they are great.
