    Suggestions (Back Surgery)

Yesterday, I went to the orthopedic for my scoliosis, it has slowly been progressing for a few years now but it's gotten really bad lately and it's in the "surgery" range where surgery will be required someday, just a matter of when I get it.

Now, the doctor said it's not a big deal if it's not hurting me constantly, which it's not, for the most part. As some people know, I play tennis on the HS team and I've been playing for awhile, so I'm used to the pain while I play so it doesn't bother me much anymore.

Here's the dilemma, the surgery takes 6 weeks to recover fully, and for 6 months I can't play tennis after that. So I don't want to do it during the school year because there is no way I can miss 6 weeks of school and stay on track, my grades would suffer, and I couldn't play tennis this year for the team.

So my plan now is to have the surgery next summer, so I can have time to recover and what not. But, I also want to play tennis in college, I'm planning on going to community college and playing tennis there and then when I transfer maybe I can play tennis at the college I transfer to (not sure how hard it would be to play on a college team though), and with the surgery I lose almost all of the flexibility I have, which will pretty much kill any chance of me playing tennis at a competitive level (college, or just for recreation at a club).

So I'm not really sure on what to do, I can get it done next summer before I go to community college, or hold off on the surgery and keep playing through college. There is a slight chance I could still play tennis after the surgery, but there is no way I'd be able to play as good as I play now, so I'm not really sure what to do.

IMO your personal health always comes first. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. If/when you decide to have the surgery, you need to take it easy, follow your doctor's orders, and allow your body the proper time to heal. It's that simple really. You're young and life is long. Tennis can wait on the back burner for a little while. Don't put your health in jeparody over something as trivial as sports. The choice is yours and obviously I can't tell you what to do with your body. Just my two cents.
How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year. Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.

Remember you don't have to go to college as soon as you get out of college, you can take a year off from school (thats works especially well if you go to a community college). If you do that you won't miss a year of tennis. But your health must come first, but since the surgery isn't necessary ASAP I'd just finish up HS and then make my decision from there.

BTW I hope you aren't just going to CC to play tennis, that would be a pretty bad move IMO.

Nah, I'm going to CC because I slacked off my first two years of HS. :y4:

So at this point, I can't really get into a 4 year school right out of HS, so I'm just gonna get my General Ed out of the way in CC.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I might just go ahead and get the surgery next summer, because after the 6 months if I get the surgery in June or July, it will still be a bit before tennis season, and I might still be able to play somewhat at the level I want to play at.

          Re: Suggestions (Back Surgery)

My friend who played Quebec Junior Hockey had to have back surgery and he ended up being fat and out of shape cause he couldn't train for a while.

Just do the surgery. I'm sure if you don't, in the back of your mind, you'll always be worrying about it. maybe you'll be thinking, "If I hit a volley, I may tweak my back in a certain way". Just as an example.

Regardless, good luck in whatever path you chose.
