    Becoming a physical education teacher...

    My question is, how?

I just turned 20 years old, and well after having a horrible day today at work and being complained about and bossed around all day it got me thinking about other jobs and possible careers. Right now I work full time as a teller at a bank.

I failed 2 of my 5 classes my first year of community college right after high school (2 years ago) Shortly after that situation, I got this job and decided to take some time off from school. Well I signed back up this semester part time (will be going tuesday and thursday nights) but siting here thinking about careers I came across becoming a gym teacher. I love sports, I love being active and I think although id have a boss, it would be fun to be able to come up with my own lessons and way of teaching. I know theres more than sports to PE class nowadays, but I was wondering how I could pursue a job like this?

ps. before anyone says research it. My computer at home is being fixed by my uncle because its having hardware problems, and this computer im on here at work has a firewall on 95% of websites.

Hey man, first off congrats on the decision. I am going into my 10th year as a teacher and I can tell you it is a good life. I teach English and coach baseball. I was going to do PE, but went into English instead (to avoid all of those science classes) I don't know about Illinois' requirements, but I can tell ya the basics.

Find a school with the a teacher program. You can go full-time or do a weekend thing. The advisors for the program basically will lay out all of the requirements for obtaining your license. You would basically get an undergrad degree and then take your license exams (In NY, we have a few). Then, you can get a teaching job and go on to getting your masters (which is should be required). That's about it. It may seem like a lot, but it is definitely worth it. If I can answer more questions, fire away. Good luck.

Alright, well I know in my head and reality of being a gym teacher is two different things.

In my head, im the cool, laid back nice gym teacher who's outside or inside playing sports all period long with each class, but realistic...what is it like being a gym teacher behind the actually sports playing?

Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym.

B/C I coach, I have some insight having spent alot of my free time in the gym. You can be the cool, laid back teacher after getting your discipline straight. Most kids want to be there. Now, gym classes give tests on the activities and even research papers. Most time, they spend the beginning of a sport activity teaching the basics and then letting the kids play. You do have the BS administration duties of a hall/lunch duty, paper work, report cards, meetings and stuff. Is the paper work as much as an English teacher? No. But, you will have about 200 kids on your roster so that's alot of report card stuff. Overall, it is a good deal, plus you would get the inside track on a coaching position. All in all, My buddies have a lot of fun teaching PE.

Yeah here in Cali you have to pass a test called CBEST. And then you can sub if you have a degree too. Then you can also get emergency credential. Teaching is a rewarding job, but with all the things you have to in Cali to be a teacher, sometimes it doesn't seems like the best choice. Especially with this NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND LAW. But good luck with your choice.

Yeah, the testing and stuff gets old. But, once you are done, you are pretty much set.

Not here in Cali you have to be in update with this no child left behind, so even the vets have to be up to date. They are still bitching about where I work! I work as a teacher at J. Hall, and we have a certain amount of time to be up to date, it really sucks, I can see a lot of teachers looking for other profession.

Two of my buddies recently graduated from college w. a PE degree and neither of them is going to pursue a career in it, they are both going to grad school.

When they were 18 they thought it'd be fun to have summers off and just teach sports/games all their life, but the pay is so lousy. And I live in CT, the highest paying state for teachers in the country.
