Cancun
We're planning on going around Thanksgiving for a little vacation. I did some searching and read some old posts but just curious if anyone else has been since then or has anything else to add. We're looking at staying at an all-inclusive resort..any tips for good places? For people who have been to Cozumel & Cancun...which do you like better? What were the top 2-3 fun things you did there...jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, ATV, etc?Tags: None -
Re: Cancun
I got back from Riviera Maya about a month ago. It's close to Cancun....I think 30-40 minutes south. We stopped at Cancun one night and Cozumel another night, but that was it. There's almost no reason to leave the resort. They have everything there and it's not real safe to venture far off the resort.
The place we stayed at was the Playa Del Mar. Beautiful. It was an all-inclusive resort that we booked through Apple Vacations so all the food/drink you could have was included. The workers of the resort pretty much wait on you at every turn. Just make sure to tip the bellboys and workers and they'll treat you like gold the rest of the week. They love the American dollar.
We had the option of going on an ATV, Scuba Diving, jet skiing, seeing the Mayan Ruins, horseback riding etc..... However, each event was an additional $120 or so per person. Not bad, but frankly, I just wanted to lay on the beach, drink and relax.
On the resort you can drink the water/ice cubes so don't worry about that. However, shower water and bathroom water isn't filtered so make sure you use bottled water when brushing your teeth.
Let me know if you have any real specific questions. -
Re: Cancun
We just got back from Cancun last week. We stayed at the Casa Magna Marriott. Loved it and I highly recommend it (five star). There is also the J.W. Marriott right next door that is a six-star and a little bit more expensive, but very nice.
We didn't get an all-inclusive (only a partially inclusive). We had breakfast paid for each day. We decided that we would/will do all inclusive next time. I think my wife figured that it would be $300/day for the all inclusive and each meal was running at between $30-$40 and the drinks were between $5-$8 so it started to add up. $300/day would be well worth it.
I have a ton of stuff to recommend. A tour with a company called "Jeep Tours" was incredible. An all day tour where we went underground cave swimming, saw Mayan ruins, and went down a zip line. It was great. The tour guides name is Joe and he was very knoweldgable and made the tour fun and interesting. We also went to Xel-ha and Tulum (another all day trip) which is a water park for snorkeling, swimming, etc. and another set of Mayan ruins.
I can give you more info if you decide to go so let me know.
Definitely leave at least two days just to hang out on the beach. It'll be well, well worth it.
