I'm confused, how did you get one in the middle of the night? Did you bang into something while sleeping? I have always used "charlie horse" as the term used to refer to the pain that ensues after a punch to the shoulder or thigh, and it is so deep you feel the pain in your muscle.
That was always my defenition for a charlie horse. I hope I wrote my explanation well enough to convey what I was thinking LOL. -

I thought you could only get a charlie horse when you got hit in the leg hard?
I have woke up to a cramp in my calf before. Those are really painful as your calf just contracts and doesn't want to go back. I've had to reach down and forcefully stretch out my calf to get it to feel better.Comment

I've gotten Calf cramps so bad at night, they made me fall out of bed in seething pain. My wife gave me the greatest advice EVER when it comes to calf cramps.......

I think what SoMiss described IS a charlie horse...anyway, I used to get them a lot in high school when I'd wake up. I'd stretch, my legs would cramp like crazy, and then I'd be fine (and pointing the toes does do the trick).I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be. - Douglas Adams

Oh man the first time I got it, I thought I like broke my leg or something. I was in pain for a good 5min, I couldn't nor did I want to move. THere is a lingering pain after for a while but not that long.Comment

I just looked it up and it appears a charlie horse is a muscle cramp. Never knew that.
I had always thought a charlie horse was when you got knee'd really hard into a muscle. At least that's what we always referred to that when I was younger.Comment

Here's the definition I was looking at:
"Charley horse is a colloquial name for a sudden, painful leg cramp, likened to the kick of a horse. The cramp can occur in the thigh or the arch of the foot, but most often affects the calf muscle."
But Wikipedia agrees with PK500:
"In medical parlance, a charley horse is a painful contusion of the quadriceps muscle of the anterior thigh that commonly results in a muscular hematoma and sometimes several weeks of pain and disability.<sup>1,2</sup> It often occurs in sports when an athlete is struck by an opponent's knee, in a manner not unlike the kick of a horse, perhaps the reason for its name"Comment
