    Charlie Horse

Man I got one in the middle of the night last night in my left calf and I thought I was dying. Anybody get these ever once in a while?

I'm confused, how did you get one in the middle of the night? Did you bang into something while sleeping? I have always used "charlie horse" as the term used to refer to the pain that ensues after a punch to the shoulder or thigh, and it is so deep you feel the pain in your muscle.

That was always my defenition for a charlie horse. I hope I wrote my explanation well enough to convey what I was thinking LOL.

I thought you could only get a charlie horse when you got hit in the leg hard?

I have woke up to a cramp in my calf before. Those are really painful as your calf just contracts and doesn't want to go back. I've had to reach down and forcefully stretch out my calf to get it to feel better.

Yeah, I hate getting leg cramps. I remember one time, my freshman year in high school, I got a cramp in my right calf after running a mile. While trying to fix that cramp, I got one in my left calf. Definitely not a good situation.

maybe i'm confused, maybe it was a cramp. it was a knot in my calf and I'm still feeling it this morning. I had to reach down to stretch it out as that sucker contracted and did not want to go back.

I think what SoMiss described IS a charlie horse...anyway, I used to get them a lot in high school when I'd wake up. I'd stretch, my legs would cramp like crazy, and then I'd be fine (and pointing the toes does do the trick).

Oh man the first time I got it, I thought I like broke my leg or something. I was in pain for a good 5min, I couldn't nor did I want to move. THere is a lingering pain after for a while but not that long.

I just looked it up and it appears a charlie horse is a muscle cramp. Never knew that.

I had always thought a charlie horse was when you got knee'd really hard into a muscle. At least that's what we always referred to that when I was younger.

Wouldn't that knee just forcibly make your muscles contract, which what I think a cramp is?

A charlie horse is the same as a cramp? Wow, you learn something new every day. I thought a charlie horse was a contusion to the muscle caused by contact.

                          Take care,

Here's the definition I was looking at:

"Charley horse is a colloquial name for a sudden, painful leg cramp, likened to the kick of a horse. The cramp can occur in the thigh or the arch of the foot, but most often affects the calf muscle."

                            But Wikipedia agrees with PK500:

"In medical parlance, a charley horse is a painful contusion of the quadriceps muscle of the anterior thigh that commonly results in a muscular hematoma and sometimes several weeks of pain and disability.1,2 It often occurs in sports when an athlete is struck by an opponent's knee, in a manner not unlike the kick of a horse, perhaps the reason for its name"

I get them in the arch of my left foot every other week or so.

                              Hurts like hell.
