Laval is another smaller island on the St-Lawrence river right next to the Montreal island. They closed another overpass in the sector that was built around the same time.

Yeah Laval isn't far from the MTL. How exactly does something like this happen? I know Montreal has some of the worst roads you'll ever see. I mean, really if you guys ever visit, it's quite pathetic.

It doesn't explain the overpass collapsing but I'm pretty sure that the unbelievable wear and tear on our roads is due to the wide range of temperatures and humidity levels that we get. All that increases the distension and contraction of materials.

I hate reading this ****, and if anyone has links to a more in depth article please post. The reasons these things fail is just laughable half the time. While I was getting my Civil degree an overpass under construction crushed a pregnant woman in Colorado because they didn't secure the girder over the weekend. Not weather, not wind...lazy *** contractors (just look at the "Big Dig" fiasco).

Hopefully those families can find peace after suing for millions.

Treated rebar will never fail under wet conditions or rust(the greenish coating on the steel) and if the concrete is properly vibrated and compacted it won't have any sizeable pores. Simple solutions, lazy workers. It's simply inexcusable on overpasses or elevated portions of road anyway. The only time expansion factors in is on surface roads, and even then it's only an issue if the roads less than 18" thick (most highways have a 36"+ footprint).
