    Any Musicians On OS?

I know I made a thread a long while back, but can't seem to find it.

Anyways, are there any musicians out there? Drums, guitar, singer, turntable, anything?

I was just wondering how long it took you guys to finally become good at any of these instruments? I'm learning guitar, but I'm getting frustrated because I can't seem to make anymore progress.

I'd also love to learn the drums. I think I'd be a little better at drums than guitar, but who knows.

The only thing I got going for me is song writing. LOL

So yeah, I'd like to know who can play out there.

              Re: Any Musicians On OS?

To get this thread back on track, I can play clarinet, saxaphone, and piano.

As for how long it took, I would say at least two years for clarinet, and then a week or two for sax. Since they are both wind instruments, the transition was easy (just had to learn the new fingerings).

As for piano, as a wee lad I had some lessons for basic scales and such, and then in high school I got interested again and took additional private lessons. Being able to read music helped immeasurably, since I only had to learn the bass cleff notes with my left hand, but after another six months of lessons I was well on my way to playing well. My ability is limited though since I didn't play in the ten years in between...so I'll never be able to harness the difficult Rachmaninoff and others. It did get me some action in high school though, girls just seemed impressed by a guy "in touch" with his sensitive side.

There really is no time limit though, and you just have to practice, practice, PRACTICE! Natural inclination is also a plus, but you have to attempt an instrument before you find that out (though it's not entirely insurmountable).

              Good luck!

*EDIT: Forgot to add that I've found a pretty decent ear on my sister's drum set. I guess the piano really helps there, since both hands are playing different beats and melodies like on piano, plus the piano pedal manipulation helps as well.*

Back in HS, I played the guitar, piano, and trombone. Haven't touched the piano or trombone since, haven't played the guitar in 5 years. I was never that great, but I was in a couple bands growing up.

I (try to) play electric guitar, which I got a short while ago. Generally speaking, I'm rather bleh compared to most others I know, but it's fun and I'm trying to learn new stuff mainly just by experimentation and playing along with my iTunes music.

I'm looking into taking a class next semester, see if I can improve any at all.

I've been playing the upright bass for 9 years. I can also play the bass guitar, trumpet, and a little piano.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

I'm a mediocre guitarist, but that's because I started slacking off on practicing starting with my third year. My hammer-on & pull-off speed is pretty lacking compared to "top" guitarists, but if I followed the same regime I started with, I'd be set. Most of the mechanics (not theory, which takes years to master) I have down.

If you're new to playing guitar, than focus on your playing and not gear.

Well, I've played the violin most of my life. I lost my violin bow and refuse to use this cheap one so I'm taking time off from it until I can either buy a better violin or find one for a good price. I also play(ed) some piano. Pretty decent but I stopped practicing. I hate playing any instruments in my house because my parents start wise cracking and it gets irritating. I played a little guitar but only by picking it up. Not good at finding out the chords too well but I can fool around on the single not thing. I think that's about it.

I used to sing... since 6th grade I did, but this year I'm not...

I'm sure the pipes are still there, just rusty from non-use.

What sort of skill level are you at with the guitar?

I've played the guitar very seriously for a while and had stopped for about three years. I just picked it up again a few months ago and my abilities came back pretty quickly and I really started enjoying it again. Bought a Martin yesterday, and am loving it even more now.
