Anybody on here ever have kidney stones?

If so I was wondering if you had any symptoms before you knew you had them. I heard the pain is very intense.

The reason I am asking is because I have a dull pain in my kidney area and am hoping it is not a developing kidney stone. From most everything I have read dull pain in that area is not a usual sign of a kidney stone. Normally it is intense pain that kind of comes out of nowhere.

Anyway, just wanted to find out if anybody else has had them and what the early warning signs where.

    thanks,

I have had them several times. It wasn't a dull pain though. It felt like someone stabbed me. If the pain last more than a few days go to the Dr. and they can tell with a simple urine test.

I see I've already been beaten to the punch here, but yeah PDiddy has had quite a few the past couple of years and he can tell you they are no fun.

Get them checked out if it gets worse or stuff like that. It's really nothing to joke about and all.

Feels like it! I've had 9 so far.....and they have all been in the last 8 years. Still have 5 left up in there. Yeah if you are having flank pain get it checked out fast. I passed one a few weeks ago after leaving work and going to the hospital. I think the cathider *sp it's late* helped force it down.

As far as warning signs....if you can't take a whiz your kidney could be blocked off. If it hurts to pee, or you just have horrible sharp flank pain that never goes away.......you might have one or a kidney infection. Either way I'd make a visit to the doct ASAP. The longer you wait the more you will hurt trust me on this. It's the worst pain anybody can ever feel.

I've had about 12 stones over the last 15 years, but the biggest one I just passed last month. 6 months ago I had an x-ray done it showed 3 in the right kidney. Pass the first one (4mm) and the last one measured out at (6mm). The other one must have been small because I never felt it come out. Drink plenty of fluids (cranberry juice). Trust me if you start getting a burning sensation, you probably have a urinary track infection and to me they are more painful then the stone itself. First stone I got came from the left kidney, the rest from the right one. Good luck, I hope everything clears up in a couple of days.

Ouch... I had 3, and it felt like I was going to die, especially with the first one... it was an excruciating pain that hit all of the sudden, I had no clue what on earth was going on. It started just hurting like crazy in my lower back... and I just hit the floor.. it was almost unbearable.

I was listening to a podcast off of ESPN where Dan Patrick had one. He said he cried like a sissy or something to that nature. How does it happen? Is it because you don't drink enough water or just something in your genes that occurs? I'm scared that I'd get one but I'm so stubborn with drinking water. I pray I never get one. Sorry to those who have them.

Re: Anybody on here ever have kidney stones?

Per Wikipedia on how to prevent getting them:

Preventive strategies include dietary modifications and sometimes also taking drugs with the goal of reducing excretory load on the kidneys:[3]

                    * Drinking enough water to make 2 to 2.5 litres of urine per day.
                    * A diet low in protein, nitrogen and sodium intake.
                    * Restriction of oxalate-rich foods and maintaining an adequate intake of dietary calcium is recommended. There is equivocal evidence that calcium supplements increase the risk of stone formation, though calcium citrate appears to carry the lowest, if any, risk
                    * Taking drugs such as thiazides, potassium citrate, magnesium citrate and allopurinol depending on the cause of stone formation.
                    * Depending on the stone formation disease, vitamin B-6 and orthophosphate supplements may be helpful, although these treatments are generally reserved for those with Hyperoxaluria. Cellulose supplements have also shown potential for reducing kidney stones caused by hypercalciuria (excessive urinary calcium) although today other means are generally used as cellulose therapy is associated with significant side effects.

Those all do work, but if you all ready have some formed in your kidney doesn't matter about it. Just have to wait till they decide to come down.......

The easiest way my kidney doctor said to prevent them is to drink a 4 ounce glass of water with lemon juice added to it every single day.

They are painful and depending on size, it will bring you to tears. I've been to the emergency room 3 times, 2 of the times they just shoot you with some pain medicine and send you on your way, the other time I pass one right before they checked me in. Saved me about $350. I kind of know when they are coming and sometimes I try and lay down in the tub with hot water and just try to focus on something else besides the pain. Passing them was never the problem, getting them down from the kidneys and in to the bladder is the painful part. The stones are sharp and pointy.

I'd recommend seeing a doctor ASAP

I saw the weirdest stones during dissection- they were a lot shinier than I expected!

I sometimes wonder if water alone is enough.

Adding lemon juice breaks down the stones before they crystalize in your kidney...thanks to the acid in it. I haven't developed anymore in almost 5 months so I'd say that does work. Just need for the other 3-5 to drop down..........
