Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.
Will eating around 50-75g of protein a day produce any results for me? I don't have the time or money to spend doing extensive workouts or buying some of the protein powder, but I do cardio and lighter workouts with dumbells everyday. So is that enough, or do I need to figure out some other way to put on muscle.
(I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff so I figured I would ask for some advice from people that know more about it.)
Muscle is not easy to put on. It takes work. Starting out if you gain 1lb of muscle a week that is pretty good. Also lifting light weight isn't gonna get you there very fast.
Be careful with weight gain supplements because most have a lot of sugar which is not very healthy. However, I have a weight gain supplement that has very little sugar, only about 15% of the calories come from sugars. Whey protein is good though with a balanced diet. Do not take too much glutamine unless you exercise right away because it can build up in the brain and is conveted to glutamate with is very bad.
Alright, I'm trying to start working out and I have a few questions. I'm like 5'8 140 pounds. I'm not looking to get really big or anything, just trying to add a little bit of muscle and not look like a skinny bitch.
Right now I'm working out at home. I have a bench and some weights and dumbells, but no other machines. In about a month I can start using the gym at school, so I can do a little more.
Just some questions:
1. What are good exercises to strengthen the abs and hopefully get a 6 pack? I already have a flat stomach, now I need to get it stronger. And how often should you work out your abs and what type of sets should you do?
First things first. To get a 6-pack you need to have a low body fat %. You have a 6-pack under there. EVERYBODY ON THIS PLANET does!!! I hate people saying they can never have one. It won't look as great as others but everyone has one. Ok I'm done venting. You already said what you need to do...get them stronger. You need to add some weight resistance to abs so they can pop out a little. There are different opinions on how often you can work your abs. I feel as though you can do them every time you work out. I would say from anywhere to 3-6 times a week. They recover quicker than other parts of the body because you use them so much in everyday tasks.
2. What are some good tricep exercises?
Skull Crushers
Good advice on the video but he sounds like a homo
Tricep pushdowns, pushups get them too, dips.
3. What is the difference between doing a regular bench press and incline or decline bench presses? And should you do both in one workout, or just mix it up in different workouts or what?
Variation is always going to be best. I also recommend using dumbbell presses too. I never bench myself but I know 99% of lifters bench. But don't be afraid to throw up some big DB's!
You can do all in one workout if you're trying to really get your chest. Listen to your body and stay within yourself. Build up slow.
4. How important is working out the legs? Like I'm not playing sports anymore or anything, I'm mostly just working out for looks, and I'm not too concerned with getting huge legs. And I'm not planning on trying to get 20 inch arms or anything, I'm just trying to get a little bigger, so I'm not worried about looking really out of proportion. So do I still need to work out my lower body a lot or can I just focus on upper body?
I would recommend working out your lower body. I think it's great to have for overall health and fitness. I really like squats because it strengthens your core as well. I would not recommend neglecting any body part. Also, sprinting will help with leg strength if you don't want to lift.
Look at sprinters! They are huge!
Thanks.Comment

1. Pick up an ab video.
2. Dips, skull crushers, tricep extensions, tricep push downs.
3. Just works different areas of the muscles. Do all on a days workout. Straight bench, incline, decline, and flys, are what I normally do.
4. I'm not big on legs, unless you are trying to do something athletic. If you are going for looks, just run. If you are going to do sports, then of course you need legs.Comment

Adding on to what Stewaat said.

1. You can also google ab exercises and then youtube videos on them.
2. Good stuff
3. Great stuff
4. You can't lift upperbody everyday. Therefore lifting lower body will help burn calories, which in turn will make you lose weight. That's a big reason I lift lower body. Plyometrics are good, simple, fast, and effective. They get you sweating and burn cals while giving you a solid leg workout. You can honestly do a pretty good plyo workout in 10-15 minutes.Comment

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.
Hey guys... just wanted to give an update on my progress... after graduating last May I was probably in the worst shape of my life... I knew I wanted to change things so I started a simple walking plan on a high incline at a slower pace. It's been three months now, and I thought I'd post my modest results so far.
My eventual goal is to get to about 170... I'm shooting for that goal by July!Comment

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.
Time for a big adjustment to my workouts, I'm gonna start hitting up the gym later at night after classes. Going early in the morning killed me energy wise the rest of the day and I'm gonna be studying like a fiend for the next 6 months so I'm going to need daytime energy.
I'm 6'1, 172 right now. I want to get up to 180 by June. We'll see how that goes
This thread has been solid. I took a 1 month sabbatical from the gym while intramural b-ball was in session so its time to hit it hard again.

You can add about couple lbs of muscle a month so I think you'll definitely get to 180.
Make sure to get your diet in check so it's a good 180.
Good luck everyone in reaching their goals. Keep us updated.Comment

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.
To put on muscle you need to lift weights, eat healthy, and supply your body with the building blocks of muscle (protein). I recommend 1g/lb. I weight 220 at the moment, therefore I'm consuming at least 220g of protein a day. Honestly get down and do pushups, plyometrics for you legs, abs, dips on a table or sturdy place and at least get some type of a workout in.
Muscle is not easy to put on. It takes work. Starting out if you gain 1lb of muscle a week that is pretty good. Also lifting light weight isn't gonna get you there very fast.

What I'm trying to figure out is how to put together a workout schedule using things I can do with that bench. It also has a curl pad that is interchangable with the cable. I tried looking around for some help with workout schedules but all I could find is bodybuilding stuff which I dont really want. Any idea on what to do there, or do you know of any websites that might help?
Also, any advice on how to get more protein? Like would it just be best for me to go to GNC or wherever and try out some whey or something? I just don't think I could get near enough protein according to what you suggested by what I normally eat.Fan of....

Thanks for the advice. I actually had a family member get me a bench as a Christmas gift. It's the one below...

I always just got the GNC brand myself, it is the same as the others to me and cheaper. I mostly would use the Vanilla flavor it in a blender with some ice and a banana, tastes good that way.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Casein = slow digesting, use this before bed (a little more expensive)
Whey = quick digesting, use around workoutComment
