Anyone have experience with the nursing field
blah blah male nurse, I know to some it might sound lame, but im actually interested in pursuing it. Ive been researching it on the internet, but im having a hard time grasping exactly how to pursue it. Anyone know about this field and able to sort of explain part of the process for someone like myself with no experience yet and just getting started?Tags: None -
Re: Anyone have experience with the nursing field
It's a 2 year degree to be an RN (1 year to be an LPN). If you ever think you might want to pursue Nurse Management, get a Bachelor's at a minimum. If you ever want to teach nursing, you have to have one degree above the level you are teaching.
The program itself is heavy in Math, Science and, of course, Clinical Rotations. Once you finish schooling, you still have to pass the state boards for your license.
Most states have a heavy need for nurses and jobs are quite easy to find. Most new nurses start off on midnights because seniority snaps up the day shifts. There are usually a wide range of options in terms of shifts (length and time) depending on your field of choice. The only area that a male nurse is restricted is that most hosptials will not employee male nurses in OB/Birthing center.
My wife is the charge nurse in a birthing center as well as an instructor. My Mom was a Chemo Nurse. My aunt is a cardiac care nurse. My ex-Sister-in-law was a Peds nurse. My best friend's wife is an ICU Nurse. In other words, there is a ton of variety.... and a ton of need.
I find it hard to take you seriously due to the usualy topics you post, but if you're serious and have serious questions... feel free to shoot me a PM.Listen to The Remodeling Clay Podcast!

Re: Anyone have experience with the nursing field
A good mate of mine is a male nurse and he says it's pu$$y city with the women. They LOVE a male nurse for some reason.
He scored a job once on a cruise ship. Best job ever he said. Cruises lasted for weeks at a time...nothing much serious ever happened...he got to see tonnes of tropical islands...and he got laid almost every night by women who thought a male nurse "was so cute".Comment

Anything regard health and sciences you'll need to take a **** load of math and sciences courses. I have a lot of friends who are doing useles biochem and physiology majors trying to get to med school.
I'm preety sure you'll need Cal1, Linear, Cal 2 and Cal 3 as well as organic chemistry I and II. I may be wrong, but that's what my friends took.Comment

Re: Anyone have experience with the nursing field
Holy smokes. I just saw this thread. Ironically, I'm pursuing nursing. I'm hoping I get into this field at this community college just to get an associates. We'll see how that turns out. Have you gotten any luck in finding anything? You live in Illinois? What you can do is call around to the various schools and ask them to send you packages of information on the requirements and things. Great field to get into.Comment

Re: Anyone have experience with the nursing field
I just saw this thread. I'm in my last semester before I'm a RN. I'm going back to get my Bacholer's after I'm done though. It pays more, and you get a lot more broader of a field to choose what you want to do. I eventually want to work in the ER, but it almost never happens right off. You have to pay your dues.
Magic what do you want to know? I know you need to be a CNA first. It's a crappy job, but it's a important one as you are the lifeline between the patient, and nurse. While the nurse is the lifeline between the doctor.President of the Devils Den

Re: Anyone have experience with the nursing field
I actually just started my first semester to be a RN. Im in the 3rd week and it was our first time going to a hospital today, it was pretty interesting.
After class me and the other guy in my class tried to find scrubs for guys but could only find girl scrubs lol.
Im really excited and glad i decided to get into this, it is ALOT of work but should be worth it in the end. PLUS the classes are filled with hot girls and only 2 guys....let the games BEGIN.Comment
