    USA chant

    Hear about this?

    Well, that's the school I teach/coach at.

Tonight was the first game we had since the infamous "USA USA" chant crap hit the fan. Well, we had a packed house, TV stations there, many newspapers, camera people, etc. AWESOME atmosphere!!

We go out, knock off a top team in conference (we were 1-6 in conference going in) 60-54. Our top two scorers had 34 (7 3s) and 20 and combined for 23 in the first quarter!!

Just an awesome atmosphere...and of course...USA! USA! USA!

        Re: USA chant

After the game, our students ran out to the "B" on midcourt and jumped up and down and chanted "USA! USA! USA!" Dumb, but funny at the same time.

It was by far the best crowd of the season. At least 200 kids doing stuff TOGETHER for the first time. Here's the story that ran on the news that night (click on the video link in the article):

Hopefully they give the girls the same support tonight against the same team.

""U Suck [explicative]" to some students."

            news to me.

the only time ive heard it is when there may be foreigners on the other squad and a USA based team beats them... other than that, WHY is there a need to chant that to begin with?

its not even funny. its just pathetic and quite cheesy to do that sort of thing... being patriotic is one thing but its just stupid to chant that if you beat another USA based school.

im glad they banned it. i would be ashamed rather than happy after a display like that if i were you

              Re: USA chant

I agree that the chant was stupid...the first time we heard it we were like "wha??" Then they would literally just do it after the national anthem and move on.

However...the kids just started doing it at random times for no purpose and the administration cracked down on them. The conference especially is trying to really get on kids to just cheer for their team, and their team only in a positive manner with no put downs to the other team.

It was really getting out of hand as to what administration was not letting them do: no "Aiiiirballl, Aiiiirballl", or counting passes, or going "Ooo, Ahhh" at things. Honestly, for the most part, the only thing they could say was "go team go!". So much for an intimidating home court advantage.

The kids were getting frustrated, and so were we as coaches. A parent went to the school board and singled out the USA chant. That led to an article in our town paper Monday that got picked up by the state paper on Tuesday and all the major radio talk shows in the morning.....by Wednesday it was going nationwide. The whole thing really blew up in everyone's faces moreso than I think it was really anticipated.

Once the students knew it got out like it did, well, you know how high school kids are....TIME TO MAKE A STATEMENT!! Thus, all the USA clothing, colors, etc and a chance to get attention. However, at the game, the energy was electric and they did some of the BEST cheers they've done in years. Nothing picking on specific opponent's players, no swearing....just stuff into the game and constant. USA came up twice: after the national anthem, and then at the end just one last time to "make a point" (I hope).

Our players fed off their energy and their actual organization and mass was a big plus. Yeah, the getup and dress was primarily due to the fact that they knew a TON of people would be watching, but that is only a one-time thing.

I talked to my seniors in my 1st hour AP Calculus class this morning about feeding off that and making it a point to have that energy for EVERY game, not just about "making a statement" for one game and then not attending future games like that. Give us as coaches/players energy to feed off of, not stupid unrelated chants that have nothing to do with the game just because you think it's funny. They seemed to respond well as they saw what it is possible to do with it.

Do I think it's been blown out of proportion? YES
Do I wish the students would just drop it and move on? YES
Will they? Who knows....probably not for the rest of this season.

I told them it would be nice to hear a chant that says "Baraboo" in it for a change because last time I checked, we weren't Team USA.

What a wierd situation. This could be a potential rallying point for your team, or break apart into sections. BTW I'm taking AP Calc right now. Good luck to all your kids in May

Maybe you should call up Hacksaw Jim Duggan to lead them to a chant for one game
