You're talking about the Philips DVP642 (I think that's the number) available at Circuit City for around $50, right? I have it, and it's an excellent machine.

You can throw just about any format at it, and it will play it. It's like the Swiss Army knife of DVD players. Don't expect any super-duper upscaling, converting, fulfill my sexual desires picture with DVD's, but the quality is just fine for my eyes. A regular DVD looks better than digital cable on my 10-year-old 32" Sony Trinitron with S-video cables.
As for the quality of the Divx videos, the machine will replicate the quality of the rip very nicely. If you have a high-quality Divx rip on a CD, you honestly won't tell much of a difference between it and a TV show unless you're a serious, pixel-counting videophile. If you have a crap rip, you'll notice pixellation, especially in the blacks and dark shades. But it's still very watchable.
I highly, highly recommend the Philips DVP 642, especially if you download Divx-based shows or movies. It's a nifty machine and a great value for $50. I use mine all the time because I often download motor racing broadcasts from Europe that aren't available in the U.S. and burn them to CD to watch.
Don't just take my word for it, though. Check the customer reviews at the Circuit City Web page above. The average score out of 903 reviews is 4.4 out of 5. Not too shabby.
Take care,
