I'm a history major and will be writing my thesis on the affects of slavery on American society, most importantly, popular culture. One thing about slavery and racism, is that only when you confront racism do you weed out the people whom are racists and, subsequently, educate them on how blacks, whites, natives--everyone is one. It's a cliche, but it is so true.
Here's my problem with homophobia. Most people who are homophobic are uneducated on the subject--by that I mean that they think that gay men will put the moves on them in the locker room, or something.
I grew up with a guy who is from the same country I'm from, lived in the same neighbourhood, went to the same school, and we hung out almost daily after school. About three weeks ago he told us how he's gay. We have always been tight but it came as a surprise to all of us. Still, we support him because he's our friend and who he was prior to us knowing is the same person he is now.
However, I do have a problem, and he actually said he agrees, even though he is gay, with people criticizing homophobes. The reason is that, we were brought up in a society that definitely criticized homosexuality and after the 90s, when it became more accepted, many people say they are fine with it and what not--yet behind closed doors they criticize it.
So what am I trying to achieve? Let's stop thinking that speaking about homosexuality as 'taboo', because it is not. Not everyone is alright with it and as long as it's not stupid comments like Hardaway's, or violence, we should all be open to people having a problem with it. We argue about politics, about video games, top athletes, so why can we not have intellectual conversations about this?
I know at OS we shun this kind of talk but it definitely shouldn't be. We went to a gay bar with my friend to show him our support and some of us weren't cool with it--SO WHAT? We live in an advanced society, we shouldn't have to agree with anything because it is politically correct. I'm good friends with a lot of gay people and the thing they seem to agree on is that they hate when people are fake with it and think it's not right, yet in public say it is.
I'm just writing this because most people here, after the Hardaway comments, spoke about how they have nothing against gays yet I remember in previous threads how some actually hinted, before this became a huge topic, about how its wrong.
So... why does our society seem to conform to this whole idea of 'acceptance', even when it's just a facade.
Hopefully this wont be blocked because it's a mature topic and OS is a mature site.
