    Re: Running Advice: Knees hurting

    Cool! Good luck.

Remember, increase your training gradually. And don't forget RICE during your recovery:

    Rest
    Ice
    Compression
    Elevation

After you run, ice your knees while they're elevated and compressed. The best way to do this is to lay on the couch, watch some tube for 15 minutes while you have a couple of big pillows under your bent knees. Place ice on your knees, moving the ice around the affected area.

Don't be afraid to take a day off, either. You build strength and endurance over time, not in a week or two. Think long haul, not short term.

It's ironic: I was in the best shape of my life and ran my best times in college after recovery from a severe case of mononucleosis, which required four days in the hospital and three months of no exercise. Once I was cleared to run, I had to start from absolute scratch. But I was ripping off personal-best times within two to three months because I rebuilt my endurance and strength base VERY gradually -- had no choice because of my health and lack of fitness!

    Take care,
