How did you find your current job?

I'm exploring different job opportunities and after having spent 3 hours on Monster & Career Builder I applied for 3 positions, spent a lot of time sifting through garbage/BS listings and have a headache.

So, any suggestions for how to get the best results from these sites or suggestions for other places to go to look for jobs? Going along with that, how did you find your current job? Maybe that will help give me some ideas of where to look.

Re: How did you find your current job?

I wanted to work for the government (civil service) for job security, benefits and reasonable hours. So I took the tests and/or completed the appropriate applications for the job I was seeking. I got canvass letters from different State agencies and after about a year, finally got an interview at the agency where I now work and have been for the past 8 years.

I just volunteered for a couple days a week while working part-time in retail. It's not glamorous or high-paying, but I like working for the state for the reasons mike95 listed. If you know you'll do well doing a certain job like I did with IT, then volunteer for something in a government agency.

There's plenty of turnover so as long as you show you are capable, you'll have a job within six months. It may not even be with that agency. Your management team should have contacts in other agencies so you'll probably have more opportunities than you'll need.

For my summer job it was just offered to me out of the blue.

It was listed on monster.com. I typically use Monster, a local Pittsburgh Technology website, the local newspaper and jobs presented to me from former co-workers.

I had recently been laid off by Gillette after they were bought out by Proctor and Gamble. I got hired at my current job for a 2 week project and they just kept extending my contract and eventually hired me full time.

Are they just locally based or national? If national could you post a link?

Re: How did you find your current job?

A friend on the "inside" of a company can do more than you could imagine. Providing this person isn't someone that's a goldbrick. That's how I got every job I've ever had. BTW Monster and stuff can be a bummer-turn those filters off and look at everything, even apply for a job you are "kinda-but not really" qualified for. One more thing a job agency rep taught me once. Go to a place you like,go to the front or customer service, ask if they are hiring, then ask for the name of the HR manager. Go home, research the company-write a cover letter about how much you love that place. Fill out a job app. THEN-call that place, ask for the HR manager, tell them you filled out a app. (with cover letter attached) and would like to schedule a interview if possible. Worked for me before, but as you can see, there is gonna be homework. But,anything worth trying always involves effort. Good luck..
