Honestly IMO, I think he had the whole thing played out in his head and it went down how he envisioned it.

Who know though, maybe he just snapped after killing those two and just decided to go on a rampage.

Everything about this seems to point that it had been planned however...it's just all really weird, I dunno.

i don't like speculating, and i'm sure the truths will emerge soon, but there has to be some physical connection between the dorm and the hall shootings. there had to be somebody at the classroom he was looking for. but why did he do the small damage first. the chances of him not getting caught between the two acts were small (althogh he pulled it off). why not wait until this girl is in class? such a confusing and tragic event.

Sounds like she wasn't the only one being stalked. This is from wiki so take it for what it's worth. We're all speculating anyway.

According to reports, professors in the English department have described his creative writing as so disturbing that he was referred to the University's counseling service. In addition, he recently showed troubling signs, including setting a fire in a dorm room and stalking some women. Investigators believe that he was taking medication for depression

Creative writing banned from college in three, two...

On a serious note, this is just a terrible situation. It's certainly not the first time its happened, and it won't be the last. It can't be prevented, but it will be addressed. Colleges have always had very open environments that allowed literally anyone to walk on campus, even entering buildings, classrooms, etc., and it's not just limited to whether an institution is public or private.

While visiting North Carolina I visited Duke, UNC, as well as N.C. State, and all were very open and welcoming to visitors. The college atmosphere is one of openness and creativity, and thus it will be nearly impossible to prevent this sort of thing from happening again in the future.

There are things in life that are preventable and can be controlled, and there are those that can't. This is one of the things that can't, and thus people are left to try and control the things they can, such as how they react and grieve with each other, and hopefully also look within their own lives and see how they might be able to take steps to observe those around them in the hopes that they might be able to notice tendencies or issues that might ultimately avert a future incident.

It's interesting to me that the writing samples ultimately led to counseling, and I'm glad to see they took those steps, if only because it will limit the English professors and those involved from somehow being deemed liable since they didn't take action in reporting his overly disturbing creations. I'm all for an open forum and the ability to write uninhibited, however I do feel that a professor is also entitled to forward said writing onto the proper authorities if its deemed that it might be a signal or indication of actions that might be detrimental to the student, or those around him. In this case, it appears the referral to counseling did very little, but at least they took the steps in attempting to help the student.
