He had already left, if they would've locked down the campus he wouldn't have been able to get back in. Remember, he went to mail off his videos to NBC he wasn't hanging around the campus the entire time.

      See, that's hindsight talking.

Let's suppose you're right. How do you know Cho wouldn't have decided to shoot up the area around the post office instead?

My point is that if the cops had acted differently, the chances are that all that would have happened is that the tragedy would have happened in a different time and place.

Yes it's hindsight but it makes no sense to leave a campus running and not at least give the students a more urgent warning when they have an armed gun man who could've been anywhere in the immediate area. I don't know what he would've done if the campus was locked down but I do know that it would've been much harder to kill as many students and teachers as he did.

VT screwed this up, as easy as it is to say it would have happened elsewhere, there is just a strong chance that this could have been limited to 2 deaths.

Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. The truth is we'll never know for sure.

They thought they had the guy. They took the guy who was the girl's boyfriend and had him in custody. Why would you shut down campus if you (think you) have the criminal?

Exactly...it sucks, but you have no idea how many people would have bitched and moaned if they shut down the campus unnecessarily. People whining about how the school officials are clueless and don't think before they do things, etc. Looking back, sure, it makes sense. Just in real time I think they made the right call.

Because common sense would mandate it? There was a shooting on campus, it should have automatically gone to lockdown until they were damned sure they had the shooter. Instead they detained the wrong person and 50 some deaths resulted. This was a tragedy, but VT screwed the pooch in how they handled it.

I don't know many people who would complain that the campus was shut down when they had two people dead and no one knew where the shooter was.

True...I just know of schools being sued because they shut down for a snow day (for the safety of the community driving into school). The people suing said they paid for classes, they shouldn't be cancelled. Therefore things wouldn't surprise me.

I honestly doubt anything would have stopped this guy from killing more, but whatever we can learn from this is good. There just isn't a "killer response" handbook we can create because they're not logical.

Honestly, if someone said that to me, and I was a judge or a lawyer, I would stare at them and be like: "Would you rather your kid die?"

I'd probably get fired or sued myself, but still. I hate people who are like that. It's like "Fine, next time we won't protect you and you can deal with the outcome."

Oh, I totally agree, but those people are out there. For example, lots of people would bitch about a freeway being closed to fix a bridge, but then when something happens like the Minnesota bridge collapse it turns into "Why weren't all these bridges fixed?" Um, because you don't want to pay and you don't want to be inconvenienced by a bridge shutdown.

                            Yup, exactly.

You want it fixed? Don't complain about it being closed for a day.

Great post, Longhorns as well, co-sign on both. Well stated, people are morons in that way. Dont complain Mr. Armchair QB after the fact, hindsight is always (F the numbers) perfect.
