Re: Are there any firefighters on this site?
My guess is they are all at work sleeping...I mean what else can you do after you work out, then barbeque? Either that or they are waiting for that call to go save a cat in a tree.

What can I do for you buddy? F.D.N.Y. member here....
You know what police officers are doing everyday at work?......Waiting to get called by the Fire Department.
(ESPECIALLY here in N.Y.C.!)
What do prostitutes and firemen have in common?....We both get paid for laying on our backs!

Re: Are there any firefighters on this site?
Colkilla...
Let me help you out...a little brotherly advice. First off....if you are a guy...you are a FIREMAN(and I don't care what the P.C. Chiefs will tell you about firemen being guys who shovel coal into furnaces...blah blah...you're a fireman.)
Secondly....you're not a fireman until you crawl down that snotty hallway with the brothers. Until then you're a probie. Sorry. Puttin' on the uniform doesn't make you a fireman just yet
. But welcome to the brotherhood....hopefully you have some good senior men in your house who will turn you into a good fireman.
Hint #1.....make sure you go knocking on your new firehouse door...WITH YOUR ELBOWS(YOUR HANDS SHOULD BE FULL.....BAKERY ITEMS ONLY NO ENTENMANN'S crap)
Hint #2...keep your mouth shut and keep your head in the sink. When your mouth isn't working...your ears are.
Hint #3...Have a good sense of humor about everything....laugh off everything......if you have a weakness a fireman will find it....and if it's something that will get to you....God help you because a fireman will exploit it to the max.
Hint #4.....you are going to find yourself in a really tough spot soon. You're going to think to yourself.."What the eff am I doing here?" and you're not going to seem to have a good answer at that time. That's when you look at that senior man...and your officer and they will be calm and doing their job. That's not to say that the world won't go to **** and you find yourself getting a little "toasted"...but you still gotta stay low and stay calm and keep pushing with those guys....whether it be in a Ladder Company like me...and you find a victim..or in an Engine Company with the rest of the girls
and you put out a little red stuff....THAT is when I will say to you..."BROTHER.....YOU'RE A FIREMAN"
What city are you in?

How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year. Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.Comment

Re: Are there any firefighters on this site?
Hey Knight, good advice except one thing. The correct term nowadays is Firefighter, not Fireman. It's a brotherhood AND a sisterhood. I've seen female firefighters that can run circles around male firefighters. How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year. Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.Comment

Re: Are there any firefighters on this site?
Been on a volunteer rural fire and rescue dept. for a few months now (www.deepwaterfire.com), just got done with my probation period so I'm officially on the dept. I love it, I can't believe how much it's grown on me in such a short amount of time...it's really what I want to do with my life. We do a lot of training and essential courses so it's really helping me and will aid in making it a career...I just got done with First Responder training so now I can go to fires and medicals both, get to do it all.
I didn't realize that helping others and being someone that others can look up to and depend on could be so rewarding. Everything about it is just awesome to me. From the camaraderie and sense of belonging, to the joy of doing a good job and possibly saving lives, the work and ethics behind the job, etc. There's just nothing like it.
I've been trying to tell people, but they just don't get it and anyone that isn't involved in the service probably will never understand.
I've experienced a lot in my life but there hasn't been anything that compares to the adrenaline rush I get when my pager goes off and I haul *** to the station, get geared up, and head out not knowing what I'm going to find when I get there....and I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.Last edited by MizzouBravesFan; 05-09-2007, 05:08 AM.Patrick Mahomes > GodComment

Re: Are there any firefighters on this site?
One thing about being a firefighter that is great is the way the community treats you. It's pretty amazing. I work in an area that has both some very nice homes...and some pretty rundown ones. On the Boulevards and Avenues it's pretty bleak and very obvious drug and gang crap happening. Unfortunately, it's creeping into the nicer sections(the whole community...both nice and not so nice sections are the same group of immigrants...mainly from Jamaica and the West Indies)...but whoever we run in with always treats us good.
We have a couple of ladies who make us banana bread and coffee cake(awesome!
)
When we go to emergencies....the kids always come up to the rig and we put them in the seats....even the teenagers take pics with us.
We always go to the street parties and hang out on the corner for a while and let the kids come over to the rig.
BIG difference between how I'm treated now and how I was treated as a P.O.
You'll love that part.

Re: Are there any firefighters on this site?
There aren't many jobs out there where you can honestly say you LOVE going to work. But working for the Fire and Rescue Department is one of them IMO. I think public safety workers are wired a little differently than regular people, and that is what allows us to do what we do. We go inside burning buildings, cave-ins, wrecked cars, and other unsafe environments everyday. I've already been on four fires this year and I can think of dozens of things that could have gotten me hurt or worse. On top of that(being that I'm also a Paramedic) I'm constantly going into complete strangers houses for EMS emergencies. People that you don't know, why they called you, or if they have malicious intentions. Finally, let's not forget all the blood, guts, carnage, and dead bodies we see that is routine as the sunrise. Be that as it may, I love the job with a passion I cannot put into words. Being able to help the citizens of your community and make a difference in their lives is why we do it. There truly is no other job like it IMO.Last edited by Victor99; 05-10-2007, 09:33 AM.How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year.
