    Getting rid of problem birds

Hopefully someone here can help out with this issue.

My wife and I are trying to plant a little vegetable/herb garden off our patio and found that we have a robin's nest nearby on a fence post. While we were uprooting the sod this afternoon we found that not only is there a robin's nest, it also has three eggs and a chick.

What's pissing us off though is that both birds are dive bombing around us basically preventing us from finishing up the garden. We would normally just dump the nest and drive the birds off, but the old hag next door LIKES the birds (of course they aren't on her property) and we also know that some archaic Federal and State Laws basically make it illegal to disturb and/or kill any native bird (robins included). The old lady would likely report us, since she's seen the work we are attempting and as mentioned, thinks a little robin family would be great!

It's really annoying, and I'm wondering what folks here have done to repel birds. We want to grow some veggies like Roma tomatoes, cucumbers, melon, as well as bird food like raspberries and blueberries...but don't want a damn bird attacking us (or my three year old son).

Any solutions or tips from amateur gardeners or homeowners on OS?

The bird won't leave it's chicks...that's the problem! My wife through the nest out with three eggs, and the bird promptly laid a FOURTH on the damn fence post where the nest was! The guilt made us put the battered nest back.

I want a way to ensure that they won't come back, chicks or not, and to repel any future residence at Garden de la Johnny! At this point when the fruits and veggies start to grow it'll be a veritable bird buffet!

Number 1....you should be TRYING to attract insect and pest eating birds(although the Robin likes to eat worms...it will also eat that nasty grub) to your garden. They are BENEFICIAL to any lawn or garden. No need for nasty pesticides if you attract the proper birds.
Of course they are going to protect their young....that's what you would do.

BBguns? You guys are just pathetic.

get some of those radioactive suits & go out to garden! That'll scare them away!

we had a "little birdie" nest in one of our trees. Pretty cool that we got to see the chicks hatch & all... but, sadly, a raccoon decided to make a nice meal of them one day & that was that......

still have a pair of ducks that come by & swim in our pool (when it's covered)..

Where in the world did you move? First you have people stealing air conditioners in your neighborhood and now you have killer birds.

I have a way to get rid of them, move! LOL

It's a nice little area outside of Springfield! Turns out the AC was taken by the vindictive gardener that the hag pissed off, the cable was due to the new construction (and hey, I can host now ), and the birds just piss me off.

I know some birds are good, and we are having an organic garden, so no pesticides. I just don't want the damn bird eating the fruit as it starts to grow. I'm not looking to kill, maim, or poison the bird...just some non-lethal repellant.
