And if you are staying at the Sahara you might want a rental since it's on the far North side of the Strip. It's 2 miles from there to Tropicana so it's a long walk if you wanna see the lights. But just think...during that 2 mile walk you will be approached by tons of hookers, have illegals try and stuff nude handbills into your hand every hundred yards, and finally get offered weed and coke on every walkway overpass. Geez...2 years working the Strip and I'm salty already.

In all honesty I've found that 95% of the "victims" I run into on a daily basis were in the wrong. You play with fire and you are going to get burnt. Here are some quick Matt tips to making your trip in Vegas a fun and enjoyable experience.

      1. Don't mess with the hookers. It might be fun to talk to them, and joke around, and have them rub up on you when you have had a little to drink...but after they leave and you realize your wallet and cell phone are gone the fun stops. Some of them are killer pickpockets and they often work in teams. In the same manner be careful getting into taxis. We are seeing a trend where the girls will wait and catch a cab with a drunk guy and then "molest" him during the trip...often relieving him of any valuables by the end of the short ride.

      2. Don't give people a chance. Just yesterday a tourist pulled out his wad of cash to give a bum a dollar. The bum turned out to be a pretty serious ex-felon...who pushed the guy over and took all his money then ran away. A short foot pursuit and Tazing later the bum was in custody and the guy got his money back...but that is few and far between.

      3. Don't even talk with all the guys that will come up to you and ask if you wanna "score", get "lucky", or get high. I don't even care if you do really want to score...half the time the stuff they are selling is fake. The stuff I've seen as imitation dope...laundry detergent, dryer lint, wax, soap, pebbles, and trea leaves just to name a few. The other half the time it might be real but they end up robbing you. Just ignore them and keep walking.

      4. Don't get so drunk you can barely stand and wander down the Strip. I don't know how many people we find who are laying in bushes, sleeping on bus benches, and just passed out in the middle of the sidewalk. Grown men with good jobs, educations, families, etc...who have no idea how they got there or why all their stuff is missing off them. It just absolutely kills me that responsible adults can be so stupid. There is no excuse whatsoever for me to find you lying in your own vomit, with no idea where you are staying or what your name is, when you are a 35 year old lawyer from California.

      5. Don't walk alone past 2 a.m. on the Strip. The Strip is not a nice place once most of the people go home. Ya there are lots of pretty lights, and plenty of alcohol, and the good times are just calling...but after about midnight the decent people go back to the casinos and the hunters come out play. Stay in groups of 2-3 and try to have someone somewhat sober...see # 4...finding 2-3 people passed out in a bush isn't really any better.

      6. Don't harrass the handbill people. Taking all their handbills and throwing them back at them does no good. Just ask the guy who got punched in the eye last weekend. Trust me if we could get rid of them we would...but the county has rules and regulations and we can't touch them for the most part.

      7. Stay on the Strip. Don't wander down Harmon to the Hard Rock. Don't wander down Flamingo/Tropicana/or Koval for that matter either. Harmon is the worst. I see people wander from Hard Rock to the Strip and vice versa way to much. Little do they know they wander past the worst Daily/Weekly Rental property in the area...Harbor Island. That place might as well be called Felony Island. Take a cab if you wanna see something off the Strip...better yet just don't leave it.

      8. Don't run across all 6 lanes of traffic on LV Boulevard trying to make it to the other side! We have more auto-pedestrian accidents here than most places. What happens when you cross intoxicated jaywalkers with intoxicated drivers who are looking at the lights instead of the road...things I don't even wanna mention. A few months ago I spent the better part of an hour guarding the severed portion of a tourists leg which was about 80 feet from the other portions of his lifeless body.

      9. Do have a good time. Enjoy the shows, eat the cheap and plentiful food, marvel at the sights that this city can give you. 99% of the tourists that come here never have a problem, enjoy this city to the fullest, and keep coming back year after year. Most of the stuff I said is common sense but some people get this image that Vegas is Disneyland for adults, let their guard down, and do stupid stuff they would never dream about back home. Just remember what happens here...doesn't always stay here.
Thanks for the tips. I was not planning on walking down The Strip from the Sahara. I'll just take the monorail. I will definately be on my guard. I have been plenty warned about the pickpockets and other undesirables.

        Re: Going to Vegas!!!

Got back from my trip last night. I had a great time. Stayed even on the gambling. I would lose one day and win the next. I was supposed to see Louie Anderson but the show got cancelled. I did see The Amazing Jonathan (I will post a pic of me with him when I get my pictures developed). It was a fun week and a nice chance to get away. I will post some pics once I get my pictures developed.

            Re: Going to Vegas!!!

I've been to LV in 1998 for 3 days. It's nice and all but pesonally I'd prefer real places like NY. LV is all lights and plastic. It's great for a weekend or so but I wouldn't stay there more than 3 days. What I did enjoyed there was the STAR TREK EXPERIENCE in Hilton LV. It was great - like being inside an episode. As for gambling - I lost 8 dollars and that was it, didn't find it that attractive. But I guess I'm different than most of u.
            My Specs:

            ZX Spectrum
            CPU: Z80 @ 3.5 MHz
            GPU: Monochrome display
            RAM: 48 KB
            OS: Sinclair BASIC
