So I got some great news yesterday....

I was at work when this email came through.

Congratulations on successfully completing another year of law school. Your grades place you in the top 20% of your class. This has positive implications for your job search. Reviewers of applications to large firms, government programs, and prestigious fellowships often consider class rank when evaluating applicants.

If you are considering applying for associate positions at large firms, judicial clerkships, or for competitive government or public interest positions, you need to be ready to apply for positions soon.
I knew I was close to the top 20% but last semester I was just outside of it, I guess I jumped a couple of people this year. I really hadn't thought about working for a large firm out of law school, but as of now I can't say the thought isn't crossing my mind. I'd love to find a nice job in Boston, but unfortunately most firms in Boston treat WNEC grads like crap. I am realistic in knowing we stand behind Harvard, Boston College, and Boston University in the rankings, but at the end of the day our school is just as good if not better than Northeastern, Suffolk, and New England, but because of the prejudice towards WNEC we often get shut out of big opportunities. I may try to get into the DA's office in Boston or maybe Worcester, possibly Hampden County. The next alternative would be working in Hartford, CT. The pay is better down there, and if I had to I could make the 80 minute commute each way or we could move to Southern Massachusetts.

It is so hard to believe this is my last semester.

I am a little worried, but I am viewing my non-traditional graduation date as a selling point. As others wait to take the bar, I'll have already passed and be ready to work sooner. Ideally, I'll find something semi-local, although I am going to apply for the DA's office in Chicago and for a clerkship in the Hampden County Juvenile Court where I have an amazing letter of reference from.

Hopefully you are Windy City bound. Congratulations on cracking the top 20%. What are of law do you specialize in?

Last year I started with a strong focus in Criminal Law, today though I have a really strong focus in Juvenile Law and representation. I've basically taken every class that pertains to juvenile rights that was offered and clerked for a semester in the Hampden County Juvenile Court. I may look at firms that specialize in Education Law, as I've been told that is the next area of growth in the legal field. Right now I am working as a family law student attorney for a legal services firm, and let me tell you that it is an experience I will never forget.
