Fixer Uppers - Anyone have experience?

I'm starting to look into affordable ways to buy a house and stay in Eastern Massachusetts. The housing prices here are out of control, but we both love our jobs and the area we live in.

I know fixer uppers aren't for everyone, but I'm handy and enjoy doing the work. My family is also a big do-it yourself group. We've done numerous renovations, additions and building projects over the years, all of which I've helped on. So with a fixer upper, I'll be able to cash in all of those favors and get some serious help.

So, does anyone have any experience with a fixer-upper, any advice, where to find them, etc?

Foreclosures usually need quite a bit of fixing, but you can usually get quite a bit knocked off price-wise. My family has been looking into buying a new house and we've looked at a couple of foreclosures. One wasn't in too bad of shape, but was $50,00-75,000 cheaper than the surrounding houses.

Maybe this isn't the best way to find a house, but you could look through here for something that might interest you:
