Stub Hub.com / Scalping
Can someone please explain StubHub.com to me? I keep seeing commercials so I checked it out and seats in a certain section for Cubs vs Astros are $150 per seat. On Cubs.com the same seats are $43 a seat. Isnt selling a ticket for more then its worth called ticket scalping?

I think it's only scalping if you're around the stadium doing that. Can someone please explain StubHub.com to me? If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: Stub Hub.com / Scalping
Scalping is only illegal if it is at the stadium. Ever seen someone selling/buying tickets a block away from the stadium? Completely legal.Comment

Re: Stub Hub.com / Scalping
I really don't think that is correct. Even on Ebay, you cant buy tickets for more than $3 over the price. Which is why the the auction will be for something else with a "free ticket" or whatever. I don't think being at the stadium has anything to do with it.Comment

Re: Stub Hub.com / Scalping
You can sell the tickets for however much you want. There are tickets going for hundreds of dollars over face value.
Each city might have their own ordinance when it comes to on the street selling. In Dallas for tickets to events at the American airlines center you can't be on AAC property.
I absolutely HATE scalpers with a passion. Every Mavericks game was sold out this year months in advance, and it was because local ticket places literally had HUNDREDS of sets of season tickets. Hell for the playoffs after season ticket holders got their tickets only 1000 were left for the public. Playoff tickets for upper level were over $150 each.
None of the teams care anyways, as long as the tickets are sold. That's why they allow them to advertise in the arena. Their TV ads make it sound like thet are providing a convenient service by offering tickets to sold out events, in reality the event wouldn't be sold out if scalpers didn't buy thousands of tickets to resell themselves.Comment

Re: Stub Hub.com / Scalping
Completely wrong. Many cities/states have laws about how much tickets can be re-sold for. There's some good information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ticket_scalping
Check out the following article....very interesting article that includes a part about a guy who sounds like he makes a pretty nice living 'scalping' (he calls it flipping) since he's not a broker: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.12/scalper.htmlComment

Re: Stub Hub.com / Scalping
Like others have said, most states/cities it is illegal if you do it at the stadium. That is why you sale a pencil or golf tee and give the tickets away, they can't do anything.
For stubhub, I don't know how they legally get away with it. Stubhub actually has agreements with teams to sell tickets for them, so that keeps the teams from getting in trouble.Comment

I think that Busch Stadium's rule is that you can't be on stadium property to resell. Since that's the stadium I attend most often, it was the rule I went with. Scalpers just go a block away and sell for however much they can get.In the United States, ticket resale on the premises of the event (including adjacent parking lots that are officially part of the facility) may be prohibited by law, although these laws vary from state to state and the majority of U.S. statehoods do not have laws in place to limit the value placed on the resale amount of event tickets or where and how these tickets should be sold.Comment

Re: Stub Hub.com / Scalping
Last year, I had my physics class at the convenient time of 8:30-10:30 at night, so one time, my lab partner is sitting with a stack of about 15 Auburn student IDs and selling them all on eBay. He sold half straight up and half game by game. Made about $500 a pop.Comment
