    Developing quickness (basketball related)

    Alright, so here's the deal.

Some of you might remember me complaining about how I was playing horrible last winter....it's not that anymore. Everyone, including me, thinks I've gotten a ton better since then, especially shooting. I'm probably the best shooter out of my friends now, especially 3 point shooting. We're playing in a summer league right now, and through 9 games, I've scored in 6 of them. This is the problem though...

My coach's refusal to play me and keep me in. Every time I get subbed in, I get taken out after the next dead ball. Last night in our game, we were down 2, I hit a 3 to give us the lead, and on defense I made a hustle play to get us the ball back. Next thing I hear is a sophomore saying my name because he's subbing in for me. It's becoming a complete joke. I'm the only senior that hasn't started a game yet, and the sophomores get more time than I do. I'd say I average 3-5 minutes a game, and these games are 20 minute halves. I don't know if he has a vendetta against me or what, I'd love to hear his reasoning. The only thing I can think of is that I'm small at 5'7" and 125. But my thinking is, if I don't do anything wrong and I hit shots, that should be a non-issue. Maybe he thinks I'm too one-dimensional, but if you want to only have one dimension, shooting isn't exactly the worst one. So this leads me to asking for help with the following...

Is there a way to develop quickness, which would help me to create my own shot? Right now I'm more of a spot up shooter, one or two dribbles and I'm shooting. The only real move I have is a crossover that works very well, but after I do it a few times, the defender catches on and it doesn't work. I'd love to be able to be quick enough to beat my defender and take it to the rack instead of having to pass. Are there any drills or anything I can do to improve that part of my game?

I'm not after speed, I'm after quickness.

Perform dot drill twice a day.

I'm 250 lbs. and, after one year of dot drills, I can consistently hit 50 seconds after 75 minutes of weight training and plyometrics.

Here's something I found that might help.

Why don't you just ask your coach for the reasoning behind him taking you out of the games? Just approach him in a way that doesn't sound like your bitching about it and that makes it sound like you're trying to find out what you need to improve on because, well, that's really what you're doing.

Because he's said many times before, "Don't question why you get the playing time you do, it's selfish, and if you don't like it then you can leave the team". It's a lecture waiting to happen.

Then just ask him what he thinks you need to improve on most. You need to know what he's thinking.

Well yeah. It's really starting to bother me that he's treating me like a freshman as opposed to a senior, and I get taken out regardless of what I do. It's starting to make me feel like I didn't improve as much as everyone thought I did.
