To all you Bay Area OSers...

My buddy and I are going to be coming to town July 22nd-25th. One of our plans is to catch a Braves/Giants game.

Anyway...I'm posting to get your advice. What's going to be the best way to get from our hotel (most likely going to be the Radisson @ SFO in Brisbane) to the where the Wharf, AT&T Park, and Union Square are? Is driving an option? The nearest BART station is a couple miles away from our would-be hotel, in San Bruno. Is it worth parking there and taking BART to the main city area and take that all day? How much would an all-day pass be?

Any other tips/suggestions? I would rather drive around than take the subway if it won't be too stressful to do so. Haven't been to SF in years so I don't remember some of the nice restaurants to go to and other things to do. Keep in mind that I'm not 21 yet.

    Thanks guys!

Catch BART. I wouldn't advise anyone to drive in San Francisco. BART will put you within walking distance of everything you mentioned. And parking is usually a hassle. It looks like it would cost about $5.15 to get from SFO to Embarcadero and $3.50 from San Bruno to Embarcadero. So you would probably need more than $10 for a round trip ticket.

As far as restaurants go, I cant think of any off the top of my head, but you'll probably run into a lot of them when you're walking around the Embarcadero and Union Square. Since you haven't been up here in a few years, I would say just do all the tourist stuff. The mall, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Cable Cars, Alcatraz, etc. If you do decide to go to Alcatraz, try to buy the tickets in advance because they are almost always sold out.

Thats about all I can think of right now. Maybe some of the other guys can come up with more. Hope you have fun while you're up here!

A lot of walking! That is the best way, Bart will work too, just get a map of Bart and see where it goes to. Bart get pretty busy at 8:00am and again at 3-5pm, so make sure you are were you need to be at those times. I would hit the metetron, I might have spelled it wrong! lol It has a I max theater and a Sony Play Station store in it and a sports bar, called Jakes. I would try to hit that place, especailly if you are under 21.

        Thanks guys!

Is it a smart idea riding the BART back to San Bruno late at night? I think the latest route is 12:30am or something. If not, how much would a taxi be to take us back from the AT&T Park area back to San Bruno?

I don't know how late we'd stay out, that's why I'm asking. If we don't drive into town and take the BART, then we'd probably have to leave the downtown area earlier than normal to catch the route, right?

I have caught BART a few times late at night from San Francisco to the East Bay. Its pretty much empty, aside from a few homeless people who are asleep.

A taxi ride from Downtown to SFO is about $30-45, so probably a little bit more than that to get you to San Bruno.

Damn, so taxi is pretty much not an option....

As long as it's not crime-ridden at night, that's all I really care about. Rather not deal with the homeless but it's better than crime.

Is that Brisbane area a clean place? The hotel itself looked pretty damn nice, but I was wondering about the surrounding area.

I have never been to Brisbane before, but I googled it and it looks like a pretty nice place.

Yeah, BART is pretty safe to ride at night . And the Metreon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metreon) is a fun place to visit as someone recommended above. As far as driving in the city, it can be stressful at times, but I found driving in LA much more so (then again, unfamiliarity with the roads adds to the stress and I've only been to LA twice, and lived in the Bay Area for much of my life). Drivers are much "friendlier" in SF compared to LA from my experience.

BART is pretty damn safe at night. Also check out Union Square, cool place to sit and people watch, or go and eat at some nice restaurants. If your going to the Giants game, I recommend a meal at Momo's, right across the street from the game. http://sfmomos.com/index.htm .

If you head down the Persideo, check out The Slanted Door, its a very trendy, very good Vietnamese food. http://www.slanteddoor.com/

Awesome, Oakfan, thanks for the suggestions. How far is the Wharf if I get off @ the Embarcadero station? If it's too far, then what's the closest station to the Wharf? Also, is it unreasonable to walk to AT&T Park from the Wharf area?

The Embarcadero station will put you right between them. AT&T Park is about a 20 minute walk in one direction and Fisherman's Wharf is probably the same amount of distance in the other direction.

There is also the Muni train from the BART Station, the line drops you right in the middle of the street. On one side of the street, AT&T park, on the other, Momo's. From the Giant's website:

Take BART from Milbrae, SFO, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Colma or Daly City to downtown San Francisco. Then walk or transfer to Muni Metro to the ballpark (transfer from BART to MUNI J or T Line at Civic Center, Powell, Montgomery or Embarcadero).

Just be careful on Bart, watch all around you and you should be OK. I have taken it late at night, and it was fine, but just be wise.

lol. So true. Don't fall asleep! And just stay away from people talking to themselves and pacing. And most important: Don't stare at anyone!

I suppose I could get some sort of rider pass type thing @ the BART stations, eh?
