Re: The WORST things about where you live...

Things that suck about Western Massachusetts
        1. The proximity to Eastern Massachusetts, meaning east of Worcester. The commonwealth spends all of the money in the eastern part of the state, despite the fact the western part more than holds its share in terms of generating revenue. If Boston or a Boston suburb needs something, it gets it. Meanwhile, we've had bridges that have been closed for over a decade that don't get fixed. None of this will change until we can get a Governor from Western Mass. Here is hoping Tim Murray moves up quick (also because he is a WNEC alumni).
        2. At least in Greenfield, the closest mall is 30 minutes away. When I lived in Burlington, VT I had two nice malls within 10-15 minutes. Now, I can go to Holyoke (really bad suburb of Springfield) and deal with wanna be thugs and learn Spanish, or I can go to Hadley/Amherst and deal with a crappy mall.
        3. Connecticut drivers on I-91. I am sorry Ehh, but Connecticut drivers generally tend to be douche bags in Massachusetts, with psychotic tailgating and ever changing speeds. Oddly, well I guess not oddly, but the nicer the car, the bigger the jerk to expect, but at least they aren't......
        4. Vermont drivers on I-91. I can deal with the CT drivers irrational nature, but Vermonters are just plain stupid on our roads. Drive on I-91 in Massachusetts, if you observe a car in the left lane going probably 60/mph it is from Vermont 99.99% of the time. Not only do they drive slowly, they make the strangest decisions as to when to get into the left lane, which they may never leave. Two weeks ago I was about to pass a Saab from VT, I was maybe a car length behind it, it was at least 10-15 car lengths behind the closest car and for no reason, no blinker, it cuts in front of me, forcing me to go around it on the right. Sadly, this happens a lot, which as I mentioned will be coupled by them not leaving the left lane.
        5. Massachusetts drivers on I-91. Okay, I grew up in Vermont yes, but a different part of Vermont (there is Burlington, Chittenden County, then there is the rest of the state). For the love of god, in Massachusetts I swear the rule is stay in the left lane until you cannot see a car in the right lane, whether that be in front of you or behind you. This is especially problematic from Northampton to Holyoke (when it opens up to 3 lanes). Seriously, if you pass a car and the next car is half a mile away, it is okay to let that line of cars building up behind you to pass.
        6. Road Work - Moreso since the beginning of August. This is a two part problem, part one is some of the crews forget to remove their signs at the end of the job, meaning you'll see random "Left lane closed in 1/2 mile" signs on I-91 or I-291. You never know when they are real and when they are the result of someone forgetting them for a few days. Part two, they half *** jobs and move from one to another. We've had a bridge in Miller Falls that has been being worked on for 3 years, the norm is to work for a week or two, then not come back for a couple of months. This bridge should have been finished by the end of 2005.
        7. The local police force. Not only are they stupid, but their stupid mistakes put numerous criminals back on the street. Lord knows I've helped put some of them back because of mind numbingly stupid decisions made by the cops. Do you know the part in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, where Harold goes on a monologue about why people become cops, well he was dead on for my area. To make it better, the towns are too cheap to send them to the Police Academy until they are on the force at least a year. Meaning we have 19-20 year old rejects who couldn't get into Bridgewater State as cops, who probably can't spell the term Fourth Amendment, much less say abide by it. This is coupled with the fact they'll engage in highly criminal behavior themselves and give their friends passes. Thankfully we have the Mass. State Police monitoring the highways.
        8. English is the dying language. Not to make this political for more than a paragraph, but it is hilarious that Mit Romney (former Governor of MA) blasted Guiliani and the city of San Francisco for being illegal immigrant sanctuaries. Hey *******, Massachusetts is every bit as bad and has been for over a decade. Sure they do a raid once and a while, but in general it is a huge problem that goes unaddressed and now we have a Governor who wants to set up scholarship funds for illegal immigrants. That seems fair, my wife who was born in MA into a lower-lower middle class family had her parents make $48 too much in gross pay to qualify for a state loan program so she was saddled with massive debt to attend college, and now we want to deprive even more legal Massachusetts residents to fund leaches, good plan.
        9. The Liberal government. Nuff said.
Oh well, at least the cost of living is lower than in Connecticut. Meaning I will live in southern MA and work in Connecticut. Their Attorney General's office offers nearly double what local DA offices in MA offer. That made the decision easy.

I guess so, but I haven't been in the hospital for years and barely go to see a doctor. I guess, it does come in handy for super expensive stuff like Cancer treatment and such.

Is that even legal? Seriously has anyone contested paying dual property taxes to a village and township, it would seem only one should get the money.

I generally hate the political culture here. You know all those stupid hot button "issues" that you think are so stupid? Well, here people actually care about them.

                    Gangs/murder rate.

No public transportation; no culture of coming together as a city. Everyone pretty much does their own thing; I hate it.

110+ in the summer; 10 in the winter with lots of ice and wind.

No concerts to speak of come here.
Back in the NCAA saddle after 17 years.

Village resided inside the Township Limits, so you are resident of both. It's been like this for 35 or 40 years.

                        Long Island issues:

                        High cost of living.
                        High property taxes.
Traffic bottlenecks driving off Long Island.

That's because it's payback for the years of bull**** that MA residents pull in CT and throughout the rest of New England.

And our speeds are ever changing because we're trying to go 85 in the left lane but we repeatedly run into the MA drivers who are doing 65 in the left lane when nobody is in the middle lane.

                            1. Summer weather. I don't want to hear ANYONE up north bitch about humidity. Alabama and Mississippi are the absolute worst. It'll be 105 degrees with high humidity.

                            2. Tornadoes.

                            3. No pro teams within hours.

                            4. Traffic on gamedays. Its horrendous.

                            5. No major airport.

                            6. No high end electronics store(Circuit City doesnt count)

You do realize that the north has several days every summer that are exactly like the ones you described, right?

OMG, I ran into that on 80 over here. A MA driver going like 55 the speed limit is 65, and it was 2 lanes(just coming in from PA) I was dying for one of the two to speed up, nothing. Finally it turned into 3 lanes, and got to pass them. I hate MA drivers.
