To all the Teachers out there on OS

So today at work I decided I no longer want to be a reporter, but would like to go back to school and become a HS teacher/Coach. Does anyone know if CC's offer Teaching classes at night? I really don't want to have to go back to school full time to get certified... so a night/weekend or online school would be great.

If that's not the case, how quickly could I get certified as a teacher if I did have to go back full time? I've already got my B.A. in communications, but I'm wondering if I'm going to have to do a whole other major to become a teacher.

Finally, what if anything differently would I have to do to become a P.E. teacher? And are their salaries comparable to the rest of the faculty?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would like to help you, but in California you have to get a credential and you can't get that at a Community Colleges. If that is what CC's stand for? Here in Cali, you have to grow through a credential program and take the C-Set.

It varies state by state. Most states you have to take the PRAXIS exam and enroll in a non-traditional certification program. A lot of places will hire you on the condition that you get certified within a certain amount of time.

I see that you're in Virginia. Off the top of my head, I seem to remember that they require some of the highest PRAXIS scores in the country.

You should Google "virginia teacher certification" for more info.

I'm not sure what, if any, exams my dad took, but he got his Masters in Teaching from the University of Phoenix doing night classes (even though he was doing class full time). He didn't have to get a full teaching undergrad, his program only took him 2 years, not too bad. Sorry i'm not really much help, but I'm pretty sure what you want is possible, just a matter of finding the right place.

alright, thanks again guys for the advice... I'm definitely looking into finding a way to get into teaching without actually having to get a degree in education. BTW, Virginia also is about 6k less a year in pay then NC... so staying here isn't exactly a priority.

I remember a year or two ago there was a program out of Virginia that was recruiting teacher and training them. If I dig through old emails and it's there, I'll let you know what it was.

I'm a teacher in NY and it's A LOT harder than you may think. I thought it was all la dee da and it's not.

That being said I get out of school by 2:15 and usually have after school work three or so nights a week. Right now sucks because the summer's ending and it's starting up again...this is the WORST time of year for me.
The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!

Seriously we need teachers down here especially in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. So if you go and get your degree I'd probably suggest moving to NC. NC is in a shortage of teachers.
