    Re: Lasik Eye Surgery Correction

I just know that my mom had it done about 5 years ago and has never had any problems since. She was pretty much legally blind without glasses/contacts on but now doesn't have to mess with any of that.

I tried to find the one with Flanders from the future going blind...but this'll do!

I think they've perfected the technique now and you should be fine. Go for it, especially since it'll free you from contacts and glasses (my wife now goes in annually and has to get her prescription tweaked).

      Future savings!

I'm looking to have it done in a bit myself. I've heard nothing but good reviews, and it's not that bad of a procedure.

Just the thought of knowing that i'd see better than what I do now with glasses (they were able to garauntee that) has me EXTREMELY excited.
Since it's a huge place, Duke Medical, it'll cost around 3 grand.

What did it cost for those of you that got it, knew someone that got it, or plan on getting it doen?

My mom got it like 6 years ago or so, and the doctor completely ****ed her eyes up. She's had a few corrective surgeries to try and fix it, but they haven't been that successful.

Her vision is now worse than it was before, and that's when she's wearing special made contacts.

I'd make sure you research the surgeon extensively beforehand.

My Optom had laser eye surgery a couple years ago but his vision didn't stay perfect.

I'm looking into laser eye surgery. Without my contacts, I'm blind as a bat. Both of my contacts are -9.5

My babys mom had it done about 5 years ago. As of now, she can see but she suffers from super dry eyes every so often which requires her to keep putting artificial tears in her eyes.

I desperately want this done, just dont have the money right now. My brother in law works in management at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, so I'd probably go there for any type of family discount I could receive, then my health insurance at work pays 10% (I think). I am worried about having corrective surgeries, but I guess it's like that with anything these days. The idea of no glasses/contacts for the first time since 3rd grade just blows my mind. I will have it done eventually, just probably later than sooner.

You might require an expert to deal with eyes that bad. Mine were -5.75 and -5.50. Got it done in 1999 for $1500. Windsor has a ton of doctors doing it. Tayfour was the first one to do it in North America and is widely considered an expert. He's also an eye surgeon and his rates have come down but I think he's still at least $3500. Dr. Emara did my wife, mom and friend around here and for typically bad eyes will do it for $2000.

No question there can be complications but the vast majority have a very positive experience even though some can struggle the first week or so with blurry vision. Dry eyes is common for the first month (but can linger) and night vision can get a little worse as well. I have NO regrets though and the technology is a lot better since 1999. There is a new, more expensive of LASIC called wavefront that is recommended for those with really bad eyes to cure some of the side effects that can happen.

We had a thread before on some of this and I detailed the traditional experience if you want to read about it.

Don't worry about the corrective surgeries. That's rare and your eyes should NOT continue to decline unlike what's happening with your glasses or contacts. Most people should probably wait though until about 25 since their eyes have typically bottomed out and just get a little worse with each script. It is surgery and everyone is nervous but you'll love it when you get it done.

I just checked my insurance and it's 15% off retail pricing and 5% off promotional prices. Better than nothing.

You're lucky Rocky, my insurance plan won't cover a cent.
