    Re: America's Fattest State: Mississippi

I am in 100% agreement that as a nation there is an epidemic of obesity. Hence my decision to start training to become a certified personal trainer. I love health and fitness and need to spread to all those who lack motivation/discipline/determination in their lives! That was corny but true.

So.......Brad Pitt is obese? He's not an athlete. It's a flawed system and every doctor I've talked to has agreed that it's not a good measure at all of your weight and whether it's healthy or not.

With that being said I thought I was one of the few who noticed all these people, especially the women, wearing tight as heck clothes that just look awful.

Now I am overweight now by about 35 pounds or so myself but I've managed to lose about 40 pounds since the beginning of the year so it's not for lack of trying. Next Friday will be my 150th consecutive workout without missing a workout so I'm quite proud of that.

So with that being said, the thing that gets me about it is at least try. As someone else said, i don't want to see you eating a cheeseburger, large fries and a milkshake complaining about your weight problem, it's right in front of your very face. I work with a guy who is always talking about working out, losing weight and all that but yet nearly everyday he is eating a cheeseburger or pizza. I still have those treats too but only once a week, sometimes twice at most usually, you just can't lose weight or even maintain your weight eating that stuff 3 times a day.

So to recap: if you're not even going to try then you deserve ALL of the criticism and you have also lost ALL of your right to complain about your weight "problem".

Yea I'm "overweight" too. I'm 6-3 210 with 8% body fat. Yet I'm overweight. Sweet scale. I enjoy food as well. All in moderation and you're golden.

As I already said, for people who are able to weigh that much with a low body fat % like Brad Pitt, BMI is not a great measure. Brad Pitt is 6 feet, 200 lbs. His BMI is 27.1, which does not make him obese by BMI, but places him in the overweight category. Do you think that most males who are 6 feet 200 lbs have as low of a body fat as Brad Pitt? Of course not. In which case, they'd be overweight.......just like their BMI predicts.

For the general population, BMI correlates well with morbidity and mortality. So simply put, in the general population, having a normal BMI means you are more likely to lead a healthy life and live longer- lower incidence of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, etc.

The best tool would honestly be body fat %, but to be measured accurately requires a more thorough evaluation, and is thus not a screening tool. And even then, there is evidence that it is the amount of visceral fat (fat around your organs) that matters most, so body fat % is not perfect either. Sumo wrestlers have a high body fat %, but often low visceral fat due to their training.

But BMI is a screening tool for the general population can be calculated simply by height and weight. Its not an end all be all, but it is an important tool.

And if a doctor who saw this and called you overweight by the BMI, and wanted to do intervene, wouldn't be practicing good medicine in that case.

Just like a doctor who ignores someone's elevated BMI because they don't think its a good scale isn't practicing good medicine.

The point is valid though, the scale does not work because there is no differentation between fat and muscle. Comparing weight vs height is not a good indicator of obesity or a realistic assessment of weight.

What else is new? Tennessee is rated low on a nationwide list. Tennessee is 5th in obesity across the country. We're getting fatter every year.

Just don't feed Vince Young too much please. I enjoy seeing him run around the NFL. If he's some fat 305 pound slob he wouldn't be as exciting to watch.

I always thought I was skinny as hell at 5'10 160... But according to BMI I'm healthy.. Closer to overweight. Niiiiiiiiiice.
