Shin splints pain relief?

What is the best solution? I have heard just ice and rest. I have heard to massage it. I have heard doing exercise to stretch it and strengthen the calf. I have hear to get a shin splint sleeve. Etc.

What is the best solution? I play basketball 5-6 days a week and its been starting to bother me. I have never had shin splints before, so I am really unsure of what to do.

it'll go away in a few days on its own. Just get better shoes or get better soles to put in them.

One of my friends gets them during football practice and the trainer just tells him to rub ice on them.

Do you wear in soles for your shoes? My Doctor told me to get some to cure my shin splints, and it worked.

Stretch your calves and Achilles by placing your feet flat on the floor about 2 or 3 feet from a wall and leaning your upper body against the wall. You also can hang your heels off a step and drop them VERY gently to stretch the calves.

Be careful with the step stretch, though, as it's very easy to damage your calves or Achilles if you push it too far with the unsupported weight of your body.

Shin splints are the classic "opposite muscle" injury: Your calves aren't strong enough to support the stresses or additional strain from hoops, so your shins, which are opposite your calves, are compensating to help bear the load and feeling the strain. It's the same reason why some guys with weak thigh muscles or weak hip flexors damage hamstrings.

Take it easy for a bit, and ensure that you ice your shins immediately after physical activity. Don't forget the RICE acronym: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. That, along with stretching and strengthening, will help you recover more quickly.

P.S.: I was a competitive distance runner at a state-ranked high school and ran Division I cross country and track a LONG time ago, so I didn't just get this knowledge by sleeping last night at a Holiday Inn.

It hasn't gone away, I have had them for awhile. I think I will go get some good shoes. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm not looking to break the bank, but I would a quality pair. Or I could get the Starburys...

Yeah I use a nike sleeve on my left shin/calf. Ive been playin high level ball for a couple years with this sleeve and it really helped with all my shin splint problems.

Having experienced that myself, do everything pk500 said. Wearing a sleeve on your shin also works (I can vouch for that) to prevent/lessen it BUT the best way is to REST it first until the pain goes away and then wear a shin sleeve so that it doesn't reoccur.

Best advice here.

Got the same advice from some orthopedists who did work with some players on the Mets in Flushing. SS are the result of lack of stretching the muscle and warming them up prior to playing and/or doing an athletic exercise.

As you get older, the less emphasis you put on stretching out your muscles. You think you're still young and vibrant and your body can take it...

WRONG. Make sure you get a good stretch before you start doing whatever it is you're doing... and if you already have SS make sure you stretch afterwards as well.

A good pre-exercise stretch will do the same thing and cost nothing. Once you start your chosen exercise after stretching, your body will keep the area warm, especially if it's a sport with nearly constant movement, like hoops.

A shin sleeve is not like a knee brace, which offers support and warmth. Shin splints are not a joint issue. They're a muscular issue, and the only way you can increase your muscles' ability to support more stress and weight is to strengthen and stretch them.
