Help! What type of spider is this?

My dad brought me outside this morning to take a look at this spider that's been chilling on our trashcan all day long. Anyone know what it is, and secondly is it something we need to kill? It looks really dangerous.

That is a garden spider. My dad has one on his fence in the back yard. They are harmless and catch a lot of bugs. No need to kill it, just try and relocate it somewhere. Here is a link:

From the looks of it, it's a garden spider. I personally wouldn't kill it for the fact that its a bug catching machine.

so it won't attack my yellow lab or anything? And if it does bite us, it won't poison us in any way right?

In all of my years I've never seen a garden spider harm anything but bugs. I'd move it away from the trash can though.

It's venom is harmless to us and pretty sure it wont hurt the lab as well. They spend their whole life on it's web just waiting for insects to get into it. If it's in your garbage can I would try to move it to an open area like on the top of a fence or take it to a field. It is very beneficial to help keep pests away. If it's in a high traffic area then I would move it, but if it's in a place where no one really goes I would let it be. Either way, it wont harm you if your bitten, they will not seek out and try to bite.

yeah it hasn't moved from its spot in about 5 hours, so I assume it's just content to sit there and let food come to it.

Alright thanks for the info guys!

Really, you should only kill 2 spiders. Black widows and Brown Recluse. Most spiders are the non violent type. Much like bumble bees, they won't bother you if you don't bother them.

I'm not sure if you have Hobo Spiders in the south, but they're the other venomous spider in North America that are infested in the Northwest. They look like a common house spider or the giant house spider, except they have a Chevron pattern on their back. And are terrible climbers...you often find them stuck in the bathtub. Kill them if you run across them as they are aggressive.

lol, he scoped out a prime spot and you want to move him. You must not get your trash taken off too much if he's hanging out around the trashcans.

Spiders are cool. I was drinking and listening to music while one was making a web on the back deck of my house. Cool stuff.

We recently came across a black widow in my garage. Killed it and called the exterminator. Hopefully there were any babies. That thing was scary looking, it would have been a lineman in spider football.
