It's disingenuous and I wish more people called them out on this breathless "reporting" crap. Yeah, it's windy. Yeah, it's raining. Yeah, it's dangerous. We don't need to see their 'talent' flailing away in network-issued ponchos telling us how amazing it is.

The funniest thing to me is that one of the CNN reporters (who was outside in the elements) was saying how stupid it was for 2 people to be outside when they went riding their bikes past. All while....standing outside.

Yep.. I couldn't help but laugh a few times either. There was another shot during CNN's coverage where one of them is on Miami beach and says "if you're smart you'll stay inside, no reason to go outside" as dude is standing there getting pummeled by rain and wind lol.

They keep doing that and one of these days something serious is going to happen to them and they'll be facing some tough questions and probably get sued. It's just crazy, particularly those that are out in the eye wall. I mean come on... rain and wind blowing so fast they can't even see 20 feet in front of them. All it takes is one piece of debris coming at you at 100+ mph and you're possibly dead. That's worth ratings? SMH.

It's their job to do that though. It would be like a firefighter saying don't go into the burning building as they go into the building. They aren't being hypocritical. They do it cuz they are professionals and we are not. Someone has to report on the weather. When you see a reporter getting beat to crap by the wind and rain it's a pretty good sign the general public should listen to their advice.

I disagree. A firefighter is directly saving lives by going into burning buildings. I don't think we need to see reporters out in a hurricane to know not to go out in those conditions(just as I don't think we need coverage of a firefighter rescuing someone to know not to go into a burning building). All we need is the aftermath footage of destruction to know what they cause. I mean it's really just common sense to me, if you're in a hurricane open up your front door and ask yourself if that looks safe. I think it could send the wrong message to some thrill seekers too... hey it must not be that dangerous look at him, let me just go grab my pancho...

Precisely, just like firefighters are trained how to safely enter a burning building, the news people, specifically the meteorologists, who cover these storms are most likely trained on how to be out in those sort of conditions in the safest way possible. Their vehicle is probably providing some shielding from the wind/rain and there's probably a sheltered spot just off camera for them to quickly run to if it starts to get too bad.

I think you're giving people too much credit. Sure most people will have enough common sense not to go out in a raging storm, but there are always those few who need to be told that going out may not be such a good idea. And even then, that might not be enough to deter them.

I disagree. Firefighter =/= 24-hour news network anchorperson. No lives will be lost nor property destroyed if the newspeople happen to stay inside and show you stuff via pre-positioned cameras instead. It's a false equivalence. Firefighters only do that because if they don't, people might actually, literally die. For our network news friends, it's just a ratings grab. And hypocritical...there's no such thing as a "professional" 100 mph projectile dodger.

If common sense was common. I wouldn't have a job. You'd be surprised how stupid people can be.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

I think my thing is the kind of people who are dumb enough to go out in a hurricane are exactly the kind of people dumb enough to ignore warnings to stay inside during a hurricane. So we're back at just putting people in danger for no reason. Those people won't listen. If you can see the wind and rain and don't think anything of it, seeing a dude struggling to maintain his position isn't gonna change your mind.

This must be the only ad on YouTube right now for real.

We've got an inside joke at work that plays off our boss's mannerisms and that commercial, so we enjoy the laugh.
