Hearing an advertisement on the radio and they say the phone number for said business like 50 times in a row. Well it feels that way anyway. I can't stand it.

I've always been against student critiquing. It makes little sense to me that people learning to be writers could legitimately provide insight on someone else's writing. And usually those that feel the need to provide constant insight/criticism are the ones that believe are great natural writers but likely aren't very good.

Not saying to look at this as some jealously attack. I just think you brush it off. Take the criticism from those that are in a position to critique and offer valuable insight. Anyone that deserves to offer writing critique will always look to help the writer rather than belittle.

Sure, not everyone can write, but there's also such a fine line when you go beyond structure and grammar. Because I may not like an author doesn't make that author incapable of writing.

If his critique's were mostly about your style of writing or story telling, it's no biggie. If its about structure and grammar, then there's concern. Otherwise, if you're writing on OS then I think you have very little to concern yourself with when it comes to people like that.

I know you know that. My point is mostly that I believe professors are setting students up for failure when you have incapable people critiquing their work.

Thanks for the reply, CMH (and everyone else who I didn't quote).

I got a chance to think it all over a little bit and figured it just wasn't worth worrying about. Regardless, it's nice to know that other people hate the student critiquing as well. It's really an arbitrary process when you know these people don't give a darn about your work anyway. Thankfully, my professor is a really good guy and had some nice things to say about my work.

The peer editing problem is that they are looking for problems. When they themselves don't know what to look for. I've had papers come back that said change this or that, and it would be to the wrong way or a worse way.

I hated editing papers because I didn't want to destroy the papers as I should've. Or for the extreme rare occasion I got a good one, nitpick the stupidest thing just to show that I read the paper and edited it. There are papers that don't need to be rewritten 3 times.

I always hated doing the outlines and rough drafts in English class. I don't need 3 tries to make my paper come out great. I remember testing this theory out... Did it their way. Outline, rough copy, final, extreme editing and nitpicking of my own writing. Came back with a C. I said screw this, I'm doing it my way. Free wrote my next one, let it come right off the pen (actually typed), the morning it was due. 100% A. I **** you not. That was the morning I stopped caring.

Literally last night, we're having some drinks, and somehow the conversation leads to the "did you go to VT" question. I answer truthfully, that I did not, because Virginia Tech rejected me. This goes on where people are calling bull**** on the fact that I'm a Hokie fan since I didn't even go there, which to me is bull****. I lived in Blacksburg my whole life, cheering on the Hokie football team. I watched the 1995 Sugar Bowl vs Texas that sprung VT into the national picture. I cried when the Hokies lost the 1999 Sugar Bowl to Florida State. I have been to countless VT games, and spent oodles of cash on gear. I bleed orange and maroon. I'm not someone who hasn't even been to the town where the college is, I ****in' lived there! I was a townie!

The thing that pisses me off the most is that the guy who was leading the charge went to RIT in New York, and now he's the biggest Oregon Ducks fan ever. How is that not being the biggest damn hypocrite ever?

Giggas, I wouldn't hate on you, but I do make fun of my fiancee's family.

They're all from Ohio and all love Ohio State...and no one in their family has gone there lol. My fiancee went to Arizona State, her brother to Toledo, her dad Bowling Green, etc.

I guess I get a little defensive because Michigan has a large number of people who didn't go there, so I've had people try and give me crap about that before realizing I went there. People call them "bandwagon fans" or whatnot...Michigan just has a huge following nationwide, I've seen stats that support it...

I guess I just feel I have more that ties me there vs. just being born in a state. I chose to go there, I lived there, I went to the games, etc.

When I hear a song that I want to look up later, I just remember a line and type some of the lyrics into Google; and it usually comes up. (sometimes I don't remember the lyrics correctly, or it is hard to differentiate what the singer is actually saying) but after some research I usually find it.

If the song has no sung lyrics I guess you're out of luck.

Yeah, but if it's a remix, it's pretty damn hard to find. I know the song I was looking for but it was a specific remix. Bleh.

That's how all of Ohio is. They're all OSU fans, doesn't matter if they go to Akron, BGSU, Kent State, Toledo, OU, Miami, etc... Cincinnati is the only exception. I knew people that went there that would actually identify as UC fans.
