    Desktop

This is going to sound like it's out of left field, but I just feel my desktop is way too cluttered.

I like having icons for music, certain programs, a folder for games (and the games in it) etc, but it all adds up to waaay too many icons even though, i guess, there should be more as Im already saving space.

Sooo... what do you guys do to stop your desktop from being cluttered?

Also, I'd like to change icons from folders or the default windows-options. Is there a program out there for this?

Mine gets cluttered, I eventually create a "OldDesktopX" folder where X is the latest incarnation, and then move everything into there....anything I'd need I'll pull out, otherwise I end up deleting most of it.

My solution is easy - I don't put many icons on my desktop. If a program installs and puts an icon on my desktop, but I don't often use that program, I delete the desktop icon.

Windows really has nothing to do with you cluttering your desktop.

I have my picture, and my trash bin...and that's it. I have a few program icons next to the start button which are my most used...and the rest I just go through the start button.

Just create a folder and put a lot of the files/progams you use on a regular basis in it. Instead of one double click, you would need two, but it would consolidate a lot of your stuff into one folder.

                  Re: Desktop

When there's a ton of stuff to clean out, you break it down into pieces. Separate the content into categories:

                  Definitely don't need this anymore
                  I might need this
                  I want to keep this

That should trim down the waste a good bit. Delete all the definitely don't need anymore's. Then, make a decision on your "I might need". Then, with what is left, consolidate into appropriate folders. Perhaps you store the folders at the root level of the hard drive, then make a shortcut on your taskbar to acces the folders.

Voila, no further clutter on your desktop, and only items that need to be there are actually present.

Also, be diligent about killing icons auto installed by applications as soon as they show up.

I have an Unused Desktop Icons folder that Windows suggested for me one day. It even updates it for me monthly.

My mac desktop gets the same way at work as my windows box at home...

Can't you put more programs in your windows quick launch in the task bar? That somewhat simulates the dock...I guess I don't see how the mac would really help clutter all that much (except for that they don't give you desktop icons for programs in the first place). I don't personally experience it first hand. I love the mac at work, just not seeing the PC hate here either.

Use Launchy. You can launch every program that's now on your desktop with unique keystroke(s) that you assign:

You'll never even need to look at your Start menu or desktop again.

If you're not keen on Launchy, don't you have a Quick Launch bar at the bottom of your screen? You can fit a ton of applications and programs on that and access them with one click of the mouse.

                              Take care,
                              PK
