    Tax Law Question?

    Question:

If I buy a car in California, but am a legal resident in Alabama, will I have to pay taxes in the car in both classes?

No. The taxes are tied to where the car is registered, not were you buy it. They will/should register it for you and then the state taxes will be applied. They may not charge you the full tax though, as they usually only charge the state tax and not all the county taxes. You would have to pay any remaining when you go get your tag.

Now California has some crazy laws, so I could be wrong. There may be some environmental fees/taxes attached to it. I've bought a car in Florida and registered it in Georgia and other than the fact that the people are idiots and don't know how to add or subtract(caused multiple visits) it wasn't too hard to get taken care of.
