If you thought Katrina was bad...

The Mexican state of Tabasco is 70% under water; Villahermosa, the state capital, is one of the most affected areas. 100% of the crops have been lost. Here's the news article from BBC:

Those trying to help flood victims needed water supplies, food and mattresses, he told the BBC.
Nearly 2.1 million people are affected
also another 100,000 residents are affected in Chiapas a bordering city
Calderon asked Mexicans to contribute bottled water, canned goods, diapers and other vital supplies to donation centers around the country.
“Nobody can stand around with his arms crossed,” Calderon said. “We can’t and won’t abandon our brothers and sisters in Tabasco.”

    donations via mexico red cross
    donations via American Red Cross
"New Orleans was small compared to this," said state Governor Andres Granier, in reference to the disaster wrought by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which killed about 1,000 people in the southern US city alone.

Yeah, this is brutal. A real disaster and tragedy for those folks.

But since it didn't happen in America, only those with relatives in Mexico or who live in the border states with Mexico will give two turds about it here in America.

Hopefully there's some sort of big relief effort organized here in the U.S. as there was for the Asian and Indian tsunami two years ago.

    Take care,
    PK

It's amazing that I haven't heard about this and there's been little to no news coverage of this...how can something this tragic go ignored?

Because most of the American media -- especially TV -- doesn't give a sh*t about events outside of the U.S. unless they happen in Iraq or Afghanistan, or involve terrorism in other countries.

But I'm sure Fox News, CNN and MSNBC will catch on soon, airing breathless reports complete with made-for-TV miniseries titles and graphics for their coverage such as "Disaster In Mexico," "Mexico In Crisis," "The Great Mexico Flood" or "Rising Waters In Mexico," complete with minor-chord symphonic music or urgent, beating drums as background music.

        Sad, but probably true.

You got this stuff all figured out Pk. You speak nothing but the truth on this one. I haven't heard of this disaster yet until this thread. Pretty sad.

            Agreed.

Mexico City is relatively close to Tabasco, has there been any news regarding Mexico City? I have a friend living down there and the article didn't mention Mexico City at all, so I'm hoping it's not in any danger of flooding.

yeah, but why did we get so much coverage on the tsunami, and that wasn't even close to our country...Mexico is very close to us.

                  Good point.

But there is something very disaster movie-like about a tsunami. Imagine: It's a 40-foot wall of water that just engulfs a place. Very Hollywood, almost like a Bruckheimer movie, and something that does not happen in the U.S. Plus, so many Hollywood and musical stars committed to tsunami relief that it made the story even more appealing in the media's eyes.

                  Ding-ding: Big ratings.

There's nothing Hollywood about rising brown flood waters. Plus flooding happens every year in the U.S., but not of the magnitude of this Tabasco tragedy.

If the U.S. media used news value instead of sex appeal to devise its editorial plans, then CNN.com would look a hell of a lot more like BBCnews.com. We'd actually see coverage about the genocide in Darfur instead of endless drivel about the broken metatarsals of the paparazzi run over by Britney.
