We're a weekly community newspaper, and I've been working here as a full time temp. for 5 months now. (I get full pay, just no benefits)....
Anyways, my boss the editor is out having knee surgery so our staff is myself, the sports editor, and a new reporter who has been here about a month.
Anyways our deadlines are 5 on Monday, I got my stuff in at 3, the sports editor got his stuff in at 3:30 and the new girl got her stuff in at 6:15. Obviously this is a problem. Seeing as we are a community newspaper we also have to do the layout for our paper. Hers was horrible, and due to myself being the most experienced worker with inDesign I stayed behind to fix up her section and I eventually sent it out to the printers by 7p.m..... two hours behind schedule.
So this morning we get an email from the publisher that she's pissed off at a mistake where copy from the first page was posted on the third page as well...
I run the middle of the paper and the new girl was put in charge of the front.
Here's my problem. She totally screwed up, and deserves the blame for this mistake. I feel bad because she just moved here (Virginia) from Georgia and she is a single mother with three kids. I have a hard time telling people the truth about their work, and I don't want to confront her on how bad her work is, and how bad she is hurting our production right now. At the same time, we can't have these mistakes while my boss is out having surgery... so what do I do?
Do I come clean to the publisher and tell her the truth as to why the paper turned out wrong? Or do I fall on the sword as I'm a temp. and am leaving in the next few months to become a high school teacher?
I can't imagine causing this woman to lose her job, but she is incompetent and is causing me to stay behind to clean up her mess...
Basically, I need to tell someone how bad she's been so far, but I don't want her to lose her job and not be able to feed her three kids.... what do I do?
