Do You Ski?

NBC Nightly News just said (well, last night) that with the recent snowstorm, most mountains around the country will have close to every trail open. Kind of a broad statement, but it got me itching to start skiing early this year (usually not every trail is open this early in the season).

Anyone here like to ski?

If so, what is your level? Are you an expert? Can you breeze through the glades and double blacks? Can you mogul-ski?

I skiied in middle and high school with the Ski Club. I could handle all the black diamonds (I don't think they had double black tough trails). I cannot mogul ski, but skiing is fun. It's been a few years since I've skiied, but I can survive basically.

I don't kill myself, can almost parallel turn, and can hit the tougher trails if I'm careful. I'd need to take serious lessons to be more than that, but I have fun just enjoying the experience even though I may yard sale once in a while (I've beaten Super Expert at "Yard Sale" in Ski Hero )

I ski, although not nearly as much as I used to when I lived in Maine. I'm not as adventurous as my younger days so stick mostly to the blues and single blacks. Favorite mountain has to be Sunday River although Cannon in NH has my favorite trail. It winds down from the upper part of the mountain and has high banks so you basically never have to slow down. Makes me feel like I'm an Olympic downhill skier.

What is your favorite mountain?

I LOVE to ski. Our entire family skis -- me, my wife, my 9-year-old daughter, 6-year-old son. They've been on skis since they were 3. We're starting our 2-year-old son this year, as he has stocky legs and a big caboose like his old man -- good, low center of gravity.

I'm an intermediate skier. I like fast cruising on open trails. Moguls aren't kind to my 42-year-old knees. I enjoy steep, black diamond trails if there aren't huge moguls. I'm not big on glades, as all I can think of is poor Sonny Bono when skiing them.

We have season's passes to a local mountain here in Central New York, Song Mountain. It's 25 minutes from our front door, so I ski two or three times per week during the winter.

My favorite mountain is Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. A fantastic ski area.

I grew up around all sports and loved skiing. My mother, father, older brother and myself were all ski school instructors. My dad also taught cross-country skiing at our ski area. My middle brother was a chair lift loader (operator). Man the good ole days. We use to day ski, hang around the restaurant/snack shop and then went night skiing. Awesome times and free skiing.

I've only been skiing twice in my life, but absolutely love it and want to really get into it. My first time skiing (other than cross country skiing) was in the Swiss Alps, in Zurmatt! I was scared out of my mind, but I slowly got the hang of everything. I knew what to do in concept and had some friends help me out. It also helped that the conditions were perfect. It had snowed the night before and it was a clear, very windless day.

So, you can say that I've been spoiled, with skiing in the Alps for my first time. But I feel in love with it and will be trying to go a couple times this winter. I would say that I'm an experienced beginner!

I've been to Mammoth Mountain twice in the last three years (about to make it three out of the last four) but have never hopped on the slopes. I don't know how. Is it worth dropping all of that money on training to learn?

I've never done it, not even tubing or snowboarding. We have two places, Montage Mountain and Camelback, within an hour and a half, but my family isn't big on doing stuff like that. Sucks for me.

Absolutely. About the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Plus skiing is a life sport. Face it: Most of you guys aren't going to be playing basketball, baseball or football at 70, at least not anywhere near the level you are now.

You ski almost as long as you live, at a proficient level, if you stay fit. I rode up the chair last winter with a grandmother in her 60s who was a very good skier. She inspired me!

I LOVE Sunday River. Great glades (Flying Monkey, Tin Woodsman), and great cruising trails, too. Beats the other big place in Maine, Sugarloaf, right out of the water.
