"The Angel From Vietnam" by Jim Stewart

OS's own Jim Stewart wrote a heart warming book entitled "The Angel From Vietnam."

It's difficult to describe how this book will make you feel but I think the back cover quote does it justice.

Often humorous, with a wide array of memorable characters in his life, this is a story that will bring a smile to you face, a tear to your eye, and leave you with a sense of spiritual healing.

I couldn't emphasize each point better than to say it's all true. You will laugh when reading this book. Jim's recollection of his childhood and experiences in the military as an MP are filled with moments that'll have you chuckle outloud.

Here's an excerpt from his time in Military Training.

Sergeant Jones put both his hands behind the small of his back, looked straight ahead and rocked back and forth on his heels. He knew he would soon have his victim. A satisfied smile came over his face as Private Walter King came running out of the barracks. In panic, King ran to the formation, fell in and stood at attention.

"Good morning, Private. Beautiful morning, isn't it?"
"Good morning, Sergeant Johnson. Yes, it is, Sergeant Johnson."
Sergeant Jones winced, but he remained calm. "You're late. Jerkin' off?"
    "No, Sergeant Johnson!"
"Private, were you the man who took my mother to the prom?"
    "No, Sergeant Johnson!"
"Did you ever have sex with my mother, Private King?"
"No, Sergeant Johnson!" King was sweating profusely from his brow.
"Then you aren't my daddy, are you?"
    "No, Sergeant Johnson!"
"Then what the f*ck are you doing giving me a new goddamned last name if you ain't my daddy, you moron?"

Along with the laughter there are moments you'll want to shed a tear...or many as you travel along Jim's journey from his childhood to the war in Vietnam.

Yet, there really is no way to share those moments without ruining the story or excerpting an entire chapter. And that alone is reason enough to believe in how powerful this story can be. It'll grab you from the first page of each event and take you through the end until you've become so emotionally attached to Jim's life that you almost feel you are the one experiencing his turmoil.

Jim's life is an inspiration to us all. His ups and downs, his experiences, those that surrounded him, the decisions he made and continues to make, all offer a sense of spiritual healing. You'll look at life differently after reading his book and perhaps even appreciate your own much more.

I share this information because I experienced Jim's journey and I feel a sense of gratitude toward Jim for allowing me into his life and confidence for giving me reason to believe that anything can be accomplished no matter how big or small.

If you haven't read this book I recommend you find the time. You'll thank yourself for it later.

Thanks for moderating that Scott. Wouldn't want to waste space needlessly.

YankeePride, thank you very much for that. I really appreciate it and that you liked it. Makes it all worthwhile.

Yea, but the thread doesn't have the book title in it and it isn't clear what the thread is about unless you searched through it.

I made this thread to express something differently. That first thread is about Jim letting people know the book is out.

This thread is about the book moving me and how I think it can do the same for others.

That wasn't directed at you YankeePride. Again, thank you.

Oh, I know. I just wanted to defend my posting of this thread in case a mod comes in and doesn't think it needs to be here.

I don't see the difference between this thead and threads in the sports section.

When the Yankees make a move we start a new thread to talk about it. We don't put it in the first Yankee thread. I think this is the same case especially since this thread is very different from the one you started.

            Anyway, it's a great book.

Really good read.....and "knowing" Jim makes it all the better.

Here is an idea....ask your wife/kid/significant other to get you the book as a gift for the Holidays.....it's a great way to get the book, support Jim416, make you look like you still have some brain cells left to your friends and family!
