Is the media focusing more on bad things?

It seems everyday I see more and more stuff involving sports figures and attacks.

Recently we have had the Sean Taylor incident, A SC football player had his neck slashed, and now Tinsely of the Pacers got shot at.

Is the media starting to cover more of this stuff or is the world getting worse and worse?

Yes. Because sex and violence sells.

And since media is controlled by private entities, their main goal is profit.

It's a double-edged sword either way. If it was controlled by government, all we'd get is biased garbage. Well, we get that either way.

Re: Is the media focusing more on bad things?

My biggest gripe about the media is not the stories that they cover, but the fact that a huge percentage (i forget the exact number) of media outlets are consolidated into basically three corporations. There are no more small town newspapers that are independent and able to choose their stories. I feel like the only way to get a balanced viewpoint on any story anymore is to go on the internet and read a few different sources for it.
Unfortunately, not everyone has the time, resource, or want to read multiple sources. /End Rant

Another bad thing is when people go on the internet to "get a different view", they're getting the same unsubstantiated stuff and it feeds people's "THE MEDIA IS EVIL!" garbage.

Nah, the media has always focused on bad news it's just that it's more concentrated now and then you have talk shows and commentators and all that jazz. It does get a little overboard though.

Of course the media focuses more on bad things...that's about all they do focus on. There has always been bad things though...but since we are in the time of instant news they just get more magnified.

I can't stand the media. They lie, they make "facts" up. They feed off death like the vultures they are.

People I know that have visited America from countries overseas constantly tell me how they are amazed by the sheer volume of negativity in news coverage in the States.

Apparently, it's not like that overseas. I'm not surprised.

Truth. I've been talking with friends about this the last couple of weeks.

Seems like lack of actual news reporting is going on and more about hype and drama most of the time.

ESPN has turned into this kind of network now. It is pretty sickening in the least.

The only ignorance in this thread is the media. I deal with them first hand and see how they totally manipulate people, as well as totally manipulate the facts. They love pain, they love suffering. They sit around and pray for shootings, murders, killer storms...so they can stand on scene and get the 'scoop'. They worship death as a step for their Pulitzer.

To actually see first hand what happened and to watch later what the media reports though does often give me a good chuckle. If only we could all be so irresponsible in our jobs and get away with it.

I think it is best summed up by the fact that ESPN has a "legal analyst" on its staff that is getting LOTS of air time in the last year or so.
