    How Websites Work

OK, maybe Im alone here, but I just don't understand how websites work.

So let's say I have an idea. I rent out a server, pay for a domain, etc. That's all fine and dandy, BUT, how does one possibly build it up. I know Steve bought OS, but someone originally created it. How do you possibly get a 1 week old website onto the screens of hundreds/thousands of people?I understand sights like ebay have a real demand, but a simple site like OS. How do you get members.

Maybe it's just me, but Im just very confused.

Have free porn on your site and you'll get traffic.

It's called being viral. OS fits a certain niche crowd, the sports gaming crowd. People here also post at other sites, and they'll mention this site. Others who are at that site see that person's comments and decide to venture over and possibly join the forums. If that happens all over the place, over years you end up building a huge base.

      It's basically word of mouth.

Ya, I understand after having 50-100 members you'll get more by word of mouth, but how do you get those first 25?

Let's face it. If I started a site right now and told you to go and you went and saw 4 members, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't stay.

          Search engine optimization ftw.

Word of mouth doesn't hurt either, just like any other business.

Basically Im curious because I just saw a story about a 17yr old girl who, when 14, started a website that allowed myspace users to download layouts for free. Anyways, it grew so much that she makes 500K a month just on adds.

I just cant fathom how you even begin, that's all.

You have to have content for people to talk about. If you have content worth talking about and you have forums, people will gather.

She probably just did it for fun at first. If your content is good and useful to lots of people, they will find it eventually.

Whackos today can create blogs where they rant and rave about the ridiculous and people come and read it. This is even magnified when they put their ugly mugs on Youtube and post it on their blog site. Do something crazy/stupid enough and everyone will be posting the link everywhere and visiting said stupid website.
