    Rolled Ankle

I was playing basketball last Friday and I slipped on the floor and fell. My leg bent right to the outside of my ankle and it hurt a whole lot and I could not walk on it. I went to the doctors that night and had it checked out, he said if it hurt really badly in the morning to go get an X-Ray since it was closed for the night, he also told me to not play basketball for a week. I woke up and it didn't hurt and I could walk on it with some pain so I never went for the X-Ray on Saturday. On Tuesday I thought my ankle was fine since there was no pain at all when walking, so I decided to just shoot around with a ball, not playing a game or running at all. Now, today I checked out my foot and on my foot below the ankle there is a large purple bruise. Is this normal for ankle sprains or should I get it checked out again?

Purple bruising is normal. I've had my share of ankle sprain through the years. Only went for X-Rays once, and were negative.

Here is a link to a pic I found on google.. http://www.bananie.com/archives/ew.jpg

Yep, that's normal. Should be purple, blue, green, yellow bruise for a while.

The fact that you can walk around and put weight on it means it's not all that bad. Sounds like it's a regular ankle sprain. Consider yourself lucky it wasn't a High Ankle Sprain.... You wouldn't be walking right now.

I would go get it checked out again. You should of been icing it since the day you did it. An ankle sprain won't heal on it's own very fast. In 8th grade I rolled my ankle playing some pick up football before a work out. I kind of felt it when I did it but went on and ran and worked out and it hurt for 2 weeks after and could barely run. Couple that in with doing a 2 hour workout in the moring then basketball camp in the afternoon.

        That was one crappy week

Thanks, I've never sprained my ankle to the point of not being able to walking on it before, so I was a little worried.

I've iced it many times a day since it happened, I actually just took the ice pack off it since I need to re-freeze the thing again.

Yeah the purple is fine. It's just badly bruised from spraining. That's actually a good sign as it means it's healing.

Don't forget elevation. Keep it propped up on a pillow and wrap it up if you can. R.I.C.E.

Just make sure you don't over ice it. My doctor recommended 15-20 minutes every couple hours. Said over icing you do more harm, than good.

I've rolled mine twice, and I never got it checked out. The first time was the worst. It got about as big as a grapefruit and was all kinds of different blues and purple colors. couldn't walk on it right for a week, but I limped around everywhere.

The thing is, I did it while drunk, so when I woke up to take a shower, I fell on my *** not knowing my ankle was messed up.

Dude, you're fine...I slipped on black ice once and jacked up my ankle. I knew it felt weird walking around that night, but didn't hurt. Next morning I could barely walk up stairs. Took me a week before I could walk pretty well...just a serious sprain. Sucked cause 2 weeks after I had to do a choreographed routine where part of it was lifting a girl over my head in a move like the "Razor's Edge" from wrestling...but by then I was ok enough to pull it off.

I had it propped up for the first few days, and just left it the last few, but now I'm propping it up again.

My doctor said the exact same thing.

Remember to wear a walking boot and bring your supermodel girlfriend flowers...that usually seems to help. You should be good to go dancing by that night.

Purple bruising is normal after an ankle injury. Try to buy one of those black ankle braces, I think Easton makes them.

Yeah I have to wear an ankle brace sometimes after I roll my ankle. Yours didn't seem to be too bad just more of a nuisance. I rolled mine one time and couldn't get into the bed without it hurting. It throbbed all night.
