Frats
What's everyone's opinion on them? One of my best friends who is going to Temple next year with me, really wants to join one. I just don't see the point because Philly is a huge city and there's alot of colleges around there. Also the vision I have of frrats are just a bunch of Abercrombie wearing preps. And I'm not really a preppy kind of kid, I'm friends with them and stuff but it's just not me. So how are frats, really? Are they more than just the view I have them.Tags: None -
Re: Frats
The Greek Life at my school is a very small percentage (about 10%) of the student populations, so my view is a little skewed. The frats are gross, IMO. The parties thrown by them are disgusting and dirty, and the guys aren't good people. The sororities have a much better reputation up here. But me and my friends generally try to avoid the Greek chapters up here. There less prep and more Pabst (ew!).University of Oregon

Re: Frats
Well, I'm in one here at Alabama. The University of Alabama has one of the better greek systems in the country. The percentage of students who are Greek here is around 28% now. 22% of the guys were Greek in '06 and 29% of the girls according to UA's Greek Life website. Alabama definitely isn't the Abercrombie type of fraternities. More Polo, Vineyard Vines, Patagonia, North Face type.
I'd say join one. Several guys on this site are/were in fraternities(VTPack and fishepa to name a few) and its a life changing experience. Its made my college days at Alabama so much more enjoyable.Twitter

Re: Frats
My opinion of frats here at NSU isn't very high since I just get the opinion of a bunch of guys sitting around drinking beer and playing beer pong. Supposedly they might be looking to getting the Divine Nine to come around and that my peak my interest.Comment

Re: Frats
Second, Im in one at Alabama too and even though each chapter is a little different pretty much everyone wears the same thing. I would say join one, its the most fun ive had with all of the parties and stuff and there are some pretty good networking chances fro when you graduate.Well, I'm in one here at Alabama. Re: Frats
I was in one at the University of Puget Sound. About 1/3 of the student population is in a fraternity or sorority, so a pretty big chunk. All of the frats have reputations. There were 4 at our school. Ours being the athlete/meathead frat, another being the hippie/"get high" frat, another being the preppy "Abercrombie" frat, and the last being the smart/nerdy frat.
I encourage though to at least rush and check it out. Meet guys at all the fraternities, giving them all a fair chance. My best friends are the ones from my fraternity, and they'll be lifelong friends. It was the best decision I made. So many great memories and it helped my college experience tremendously."You should only drink to enhance your social skills." -Barney GumbleComment

Re: Frats
You and I have talked about this before. Once you see the divine 9 you'll see what it's all about. The university where you are really skews how you look at Greek Life.

Re: Frats
Like any collection of 30-40+ people, there are going to be some good people and some you won't like. I never rushed, but I had some good friends in frats and hung around them. There definitely some stuck-up, "we run the school" type guys who join, but there are also a ton of normal, down to earth type guys as well.
Everyone I know that did rush loved it, but the people I know that didn't don't regret that decision either. You are going to have a blast in college either way, just decide if you'd rather spend most of your time with a group of 5-10 close friends or in big groups of a few dozen with keg parties every weekend.Comment

Re: Frats
My opinion exactly. I am the type of person who makes friends somewhat easily. At my school, I was rooming with my best friend growing up anyway and we were able to make friends with quite a few other guys. To us, that's all we needed, and nobody had to pay any dues either (aside from being the DD occasionally).Comment

Yeah, I hope they at least get them here for an informational. The girl that brought it up to me said I should be an Omega.Comment

Re: Frats
Where I went to school, Notre Dame, there were no frats. Our "frats" were our dorms. There definitely weren't any crazy initiations or anything like that so I never had to experience any of that stuff.
I was on the baseball team anyways so I guess that was my social click.Comment

Re: Frats
Yeah, I consistently get that "Football is a frat" talk here. Frat boys, while not really dogged, just aren't very highly looked upon. I guess it's because most of them don't make it 4-5 years with being on the football team and being a part of the frat.Where I went to school, Notre Dame, there were no frats.
