Trying to decide on a 3 day vacation destination, please help!

So after the bar exam my wife and I are planning to go away for a few days. We are looking at several cities and I have some generic questions about each to start.
    1. Would we need to rent a car or is public transportation adequate? Alternatively, would the cost of taking cabs be expensive or cheap?
    2. What is there to do in each city that might not be a tourist destination but is something you should do.
    3. What are some good local restaurants that you must try that are relatively inexpensive?
    4. What are the tourist hot spots?
    5. How's the weather in late February-early March?
    6. What is there to do at night?
Right now the cities we are looking at include San Diego, New Orleans, and Austin, Texas. I'd also be open to some other suggestions, but as you can tell the key is finding a warm city, so that pretty much rules out places like Chicago, Cleveland, or Denver.

As for New Orleans, how much as it been rebuilt after Katrina? Is it more or less back up and running for tourism or should we avoid it?

    Thanks in advance.

    EDIT
We considered Las Vegas, but it is a little more than we can spend right now.

I second that. Especially on the notion that you don't need any more than 3 days of Vegas.

        Iran! Just kiddin'...
How about San Francisco? It's a very nice place and that city always feels like it's on vacation IMO. Not sure about the weather though.

san diego was one of my favorite vacation spots. however, if you haven't yet been, choose vegas.

The first place that came to mind when I read your post MassNole was Vegas like everyone else said. If you stay on the strip you do not need a rental car. They have the monorail and you can use that to get up and down the strip.

Vegas. The ultimate spot for a three-day trip, even if you don't gamble.

Thanks for the Vegas suggestions, but unfortunately that appears to be a little outside of our budget right now.

Reno....like Vegas, only smaller, cheaper and less extravegant.

San Antonio is a spot to consider as well. The River Walk is awsome. Most everything is in walking distance, but you can take a gonolda ride to wherever you want to go. Good restaurants, good bars and just a great atmosphere. I've never been big on Piano bars, but if you get a chance, go to Dirty Nellies. It's one of those places you can stay for 5 or 6 hours and it feels like 2 oe 3. The Alamo is near by if your looking for the typical tourist attraction. I guarnatee you'd have a good time. I live a few hours away in Houston and we've taken several of our friends there and they've all had a blast. The good thing about it is it is good for a couple as well as a large group.

If you are unfamiliar, they basically have a very large canal system underneath the main city. The canal is lined by all sorts of restaurants, bars, shops, etc on both sides. And pretty much every block has access to the main level of the city.

How is Vegas outside of your budget but these other cities are? You're coming from Massachusetts, right?

You can fly to Vegas for less than you can fly to Austin, San Diego or New Orleans, and you can stay in a nice hotel in Vegas for less than $50 per night during the week, and not that much more on weekends. Good food is VERY inexpensive in Vegas, too, much less than either of those two cities.

Trust me: A three-day trip to Vegas will cost you less than a comparable trip to almost any other city in America, not counting gambling expenses. And the beauty is that you can go on vacation to Vegas and actually MAKE money, if you choose to gamble.

No worries if you aren't interested in Vegas, but cost shouldn't be a concern for a Vegas trip. It's the most economical vacation destination in America due to the insane competition between the hotels and casinos for your lodging, gambling, dining and entertainment dollars.

You technically can make money, but aren't very likely to. Key is having a strong enough mind to quit if you get ahead.

And you're right, there is nowhere besides Vegas where you can stay in such a nice hotel for such little money. They look to make their money in the casinos, so go, don't gamble, and take advantage of the fact that you can enjoy the weather, shows, whatever else besides gambling, and enjoy a nice room as well.

Just remember it's only expensive to come here if you make it so. Gambling/drinking on the Strip/and eating at "fancy" restaurants on the Strip are what drive up the price coming to Vegas. A lot of times you can get package deals with air fare/hotel for a few nights cheaper than to most other cities. Hotels are more than willing to cut you a break on the later in hopes that you stay up late doing the former which they make their real money on.

Eating at buffets (which are usually pretty good), eating at small cafe's inside casino's (which are good too) saves you money. If you stay on the Strip you can walk everywhere which saves you money since you don't need a car. The casino's all have shuttle service to and from the airport. Also walk around a bit inside casino's and you will find all sorts of giveaway stuff. Get into some clubs free/buy 1 get 1 free drinks/etc. Also it's about 70 degrees today and sunny. People are wearing shorts and sandals all up and down the Strip.

One place I suggest everyone go, especially at night is the restaurant Mon Ami at the Paris. Get an outside seat as well. It's great food, relatively cheap (about $50 for 2 people) but the bonus is you have a great seat for the Bellagio water show which goes off every 15 minutes across the street. Another nice place is VooDoo lounge at the Rio. It's on the 51st floor and offers an unbelievable view of the Strip. Walk around the Rio though until you find free passes...because it's $20 a person just to go up without them. Be careful what you drink as well. I took a date up there Sunday night and for 4 beers and 2 waters it was $62. I remembered why I enacted the "no drinking on the Strip" rule in the first place.

We went to the VooDoo when my wife and I were there last month. You're right. FANTASTIC view of the Strip and we were lucky enough to find the free passes.
