And for those who want to make their essays look longer... I learned a trick to make college papers longer the other month.
    1. Finish your paper
    2. Ctrl+F and search for "." (a period.)
    3. Then go to "Change All"
    4. Change the font size of all your periods. I usually make them size 14 if I write a size 12 font.

It works much better than the two space trick.
    holy crap that's brilliant.

Edit: I just did it on one of my old essays.. 14 doesn't really change it much. You have to go much bigger

Oldest trick in the book Branski. I think it only really helps when you're quite close to the page minimum though.

Or you can just select all of the text and change it the font to Courier New. Unless, of course, your prof wants a specific text.

            Re: Spaces Between Sentences

Okay, here's the deal with two spaces vs. one space.

Two spaces used to be completely necessary back in the days of typewriters. Why? The characters on the type blocks were what was called "monospace," which basically means that the block for every letter whether you're talking about a uppercase 'W' or a period ('.') or a comma (',') were all the same size. Which means that the space around each character, no matter how wide, is completely the same. (Unfortunately, OS text editor doesn't allow for monospace fonts, so you're going to have to trust me on this one). Or you can view some monospace fonts here: http://www.lowing.org/fonts/

So what does this mean for the reader? Visually speaking, the space between characters varied widely. Because a periods are typically used to denote the end of a sentence, two spaces were added after a period so that the space wouldn't look completely uniform and thus sentences would be easier to scan. Now, of course, we're in the digital age and (fortunately) not all characters are created equal. And therefore, a single space after punctuation is correct.

            Make sense?

I voted one but I meant to vote two.

I've always done two. It just seems proper.

                Re: Spaces Between Sentences

OS does allow monospace if you use code. Or you could use Microsoft Notepad and see. Example:

                Code:
Charlie ate a dog. Yes he did.
Charlie ate a dog. Yes he did.
The two spaces does look better, which makes sense Chris. I had really never thought of that.

                      That's good ****.

I just tried it on an essay from last semester, went from 4 pages to 5 pages.

                        Re: Spaces Between Sentences

Yeah, it should work out to about a page, maybe a page and a half every 8 pages you write.

The only reason I do it is because I'm 100% against bulls***ing essays, trying to make the word count or page count by filling it with generic words and sentences that don't add anything of substance to the points I bring up. My style of writing is short and to the point, which is also another term for me justifying cheating on essays lol

And I still don't get the two spaces after a period. I just think it looks tacky and makes things harder to read.

Combine that with the period font change, and I bet you could turn a 3 page essay into a 5 page one haha

I didn't read through this whole thread, but all through school I was taught two spaces after periods.

HOWEVER, in College, I'm training to be a journalist. In my News Writing class, we were taught one space after periods.
