Is anyone a member of Planet Fitness?
A new one is opening near my work, and I was thinking about joining because they're so cheap, but I've recently read some bad things about them, and am now having second thoughts.

Re: Is anyone a member of Planet Fitness?
There's one across the road from my house; can't get much more convenient than that. I've got no complaints. $10 a month is pretty darn reasonable, and it's the main reason I canceled my membership with the 24 hr. gym I was going to. I usually work out from 10:30 till midnight anyway, and the Planet Fitness by my house closes at midnight, so why not save an extra 20 bucks a month. Usually I'm the only one in there when I work out, which I like. Like I said, no complaints here, nor have I heard of any. They just opened during the winter, so that may be why. -

Re: Is anyone a member of Planet Fitness?
Here are my complaints:
1) Lack of equipment (VERY BIG TO ME)
- They had no squat rack!!!
- DB's went up to 75 lbs!!!
- I don't believe there was any Hammer Strength machinery
2) Discrimination against body builders
- They have a "lunk alarm". I understand they don't want bodybuilders there...okay. However having an alarm for them is ridiculous
3) Aimed towards "casual fitness". This is the reason for lack of equipment. It was the answer I was given when I asked about the squat rack. It's supposed to be a "comfortable environment". If you're trying to get serious about working out...I'm not so sure about this place.
Good stuff:
1) Like you said, it's cheap
2) It will be convenient for your work
3) More than likely you'll have fewer people actually lifting there
4) They usually keep the place really clean
I would suggest checking the place out. Since they are franchised the management can vary from place to place. I'd see what type of equipment they have and go there when you see yourself working out. That way you can gauge the traffic.
I go to Peak. I only pay $12.75/month because I had a friend who worked there. Honestly my Peak sucks too.....the equipment is much better (too bad it's really old) but the traffic is terrible.
Hope I helped...Last edited by Guest; 03-10-2008, 07:22 AM.Comment

Re: Is anyone a member of Planet Fitness?
There's a Peak Fitness not far from my house, too... They used to be Beyond Fitness, but got taken over by Peak because of all the complaints. They even made the evening news around here because of all the shenanigans with people's contracts. I think they are now 24 hrs, I'm not sure. But I'll stick with Planet; you can't beat having the gym literally across the street from your house. Plus I'm starting a new job in a few weeks, and the company has a gym on-site, in addition to reimbursing you for gym fees... Win-win for me.Comment

My GF is and she said it's just cardio equipment and Natalus type machines, no thanks.
